Jamaica finish 22nd at World Junior Surfing Champs
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 May, 2006 : - - Team Jamaica with a partial team held on to 22nd place from the 27 competing nations at the 2006 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Brazil. "Our five youngsters did our country proud going up against the top Under-18 and Under-16 surfers in the world," said team manager Billy Wilmot.
"As usual Team Jamaica was one of the most popular, though smallest, team of the games. Our boys did well. Jason Pusey and Shane Simmonds, both of Boston Bay in Portland, were Jamaica's top finishers, earning 240 points each with Ackeam Phillips of Bull Bay contributing 180 points and Eneson Lightbourn and Omar Jacks garnering 144 points each for Jamaica's total of 948," added Wilmot.
Jamaica finished ahead of Canada, Germany, Dominican Republic, Sweden and Guatemala. "Hopefully, we will be able to field a complete team for the Junior World Champs next year in Portugal. These games have shown our young surfers that they are quite capable of competing at this level and doing Jamaica proud.
We are one of the youngest surfing nations at the games and we have made a bold statement with this finish with only five out of a 12-member team," said team coach Eugene Miller. Team Jamaica returned to the island on Monday.
