The Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational In Memory of Eddie Aikau

The Big Wave Contest Will Go For Ten More Years

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 May, 2006 : - - Quiksilver and the Aikau Family are pleased to announce a 10-year joint commitment to continue The Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational, in Memory of Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay, Hawaii, through the winter season of 2015/2016.

The Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational is held each winter at Waimea Bay, on the famous North Shore of Oahu, when wave face heights measure 40-feet or greater. It specifically honors the memory of Hawaiian Eddie Aikau - the first official lifeguard of Waimea Bay, and pioneer big-wave rider.

Aikau was lost at sea in 1978, during an ill-fated voyage of the Hokule’a sailing canoe. Just 31 years of age, Aikau left behind the indelible mark of a hero and a legend by way of the giant waves he rode, the countless lives he saved, the message of 'aloha' he extended to those during his international travels, and the love he showed for his fellow man that ultimately cost him his life.

The inaugural Quiksilver/Eddie Aikau big-wave event was held in 1985. This new agreement ensures that the life of the event will at least mirror that of Aikau's, with its 31st anniversary being the winter of 2015/2016.

Calling it "the Wimbledon of Surfing", Quiksilver CEO Bob McKnight announced the new deal today while pointing out that the event itself will retain its present format of 24 invited big-wave riders, independently selected by a committee of their peers.

"We are very excited about this 10-year agreement," said McKnight. "It is our commitment to the Aikaus, and to the memory of Eddie, that we will ensure this event stays true to its roots, continuing on as a living tribute to Aikau and to the brotherhood of big-wave riding. We will continue to show our respect for Waimea Bay and for the special place that surfing holds within the Hawaiian culture."

Speaking on behalf of the Aikau Family, Eddie’s sister Myra Aikau expressed what an honor it is to see the event continue.

“For us, it has been such an honor. We have been with Quiksilver all these years and Eddie would be so proud of this. His legacy has done so much for so many people and we know that means a lot to Quiksilver too.”
