Will The Real Surf City USA Please Stand Up?
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 June, 2006 : - - The city of Santa Cruz plans to mount a challenge to the City of Huntington Beach’s assertion that it is “Surf City USA.” The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted Huntington Beach the use of “Surf City USA” as a brand name.
A northern California senator has introduced a bill in the state senate that would assert that Santa Cruz be officially named “Surf City USA.” The Democrat who authored the legislation SCR 60 City of Santa Cruz: "Surf City, U.S.A." is Senator Joe Simitian representing Santa Cruz and the 11th District.
"It puts the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on notice that there are competing claims to Surf City USA," Simitian said Friday. "I think Surf City is as much a state of mind as it is a place. I don’t think you can trademark a state of mind."
The resolution does not have any legal weight. But, it would make an official statement that California politicians back Santa Cruz as the true Surf City USA.
This longstanding usually silly battle that even came down to surfing competition challenges has now turned serious. Huntington Beach applied for official recognition of the name in 2004. Santa Cruz has also filed for its own trademark: "Original Surf City, USA
