Rusty Pro's Men's Heats Dominated by the Young Guns

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 June, 2006 : - - The young guns gave the old guard a run for their money at the Rusty Pro presented by MINI at New Pier during the early rounds of the Pro Men’s event. South Africa’s finest surfers are battling it out for R20, 000 in prize money as well as valuable rating points in the 2A rated ASP Africa surfing contest which runs until Sunday, June 25.

17 year old Kyle Beach (Queensburgh) led the charge in the Pro Men’s division by scoring an impressive 8 out of a possible ten points for annihilating a wave with his trademark backhand powerful turns. Beach advanced in first place with Wade Lewis (Durban) eliminating Capetonians Brett Shearer and Brandon Roberts.

Lanky Durbanite Damien Fahrenfort was the next to shine stepping up to the plate with a 7.17-point ride which was enough for him to clinch a heat victory over former ISA Junior World Champion Jordy Smith (Umbilo). The pair ousted former ASP Africa Pro Surf Tour event winner Dylan Stuart (Umdloti) and Umhlanga surfer Greg Lazarus.

Stanley Badger (Cape St Francis) wowed the crowds by boosting a massive air reverse 360 to scoop the top score of the day – an impressive and near flawless 9.17 points.

The surf conditions remained good all day with one-metre high right breaking waves on offer fanned by a south to south westerly offshore wind. As the day progressed the waves become slightly choppy and surfers had to put in extra effort to obtain high scores. Bigger swell and favourable winds have been predicted for the remainder of the event.

Today (Saturday) sees the round of 48 Pro Men take to the water at 08h00 followed by the Pro Juniors round of 32; the Pro Men’s round before the quarterfinals will take place after lunch.

“Over the next two days there will be world class surfing performances at New Pier. With the introduction of the top seeds who will be surfing on Saturday we urge members of the public to come down to watch some of the most exciting surfing on offer,” said Rusty Sales Manager Mike Varikas.

The 2006 Rusty Pro presented by MINI does not only cater for Pro Men and Pro Juniors but also for Pro Women.

The Rusty Pro presented by MINI will give locals a platform to excel on the domestic circuit as well as assisting them to get comfortable competing on the Durban beachfront ahead of the international surfers’ arrival for the Mr Price Pro 6 star World Qualifying Series event.
