Hunt Is On For Oz's Biggest By Two Of Tasmania's Best

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 July, 2006 : - -  Two of Tasmania's best surfers are on the hunt for Australia's biggest wave in the hope of winning $30,000 in a trans-Tasman surfing contest. James Hollmer-Cross and Marty Paradisis are competitors in this year's Oakley/ASL Big Wave Awards, which offer a $30,000 prize pool for surfers who can ride the biggest and best waves in Australia and New Zealand between now and January next year.

The pair are confident their skills, matched with massive swells at Tassie's top surfing spots like Shipstern Bluff, near Port Arthur, and First Lookout Point at Recherche Bay, are enough to take out the competition. The pair have been keeping a close eye on internet weather forecasts and chasing waves around the state with photographers in tow. While the surfers have their sights on the top award, they are also working towards other prizes in the competition.

The biggest wave wins $20,000, but there's also $5000 for the biggest paddle-in, $3000 for best overall performance, and $2000 for a videographer/photographer award. "The money would be a bonus," Hollmer-Cross said. "But we mainly do it just because it's so much fun, it's such an adrenalin rush."
