Jordy Smith Early Standout at Mr Price Pro

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 July, 2006 : - - Warm water, sunny skies and a spate of new school performances set the scene for the men’s round of 192 completed at the Mr Price Pro on Monday. Over 160 international competitors took to the water for the first time in the main event , performing aerial reverses, alley oops and passion pops that lit up the 0.5- 1 meter waves at Durban’s North Beach.

Leading the pack was the highly talented former ISA World Junior Champion, Jordy Smith (Umbilo) whose relaxed style and splendid combination of controlled maneuvers, earned him his fifth heat victory at this event, as well as the highest individual wave score of all 24 heats, an 8.50 out of a possible ten points.

Eight heats later and as the swell dropped to just half-a-meter, it was Jock Barnes (Aus) whose backhand, vertical off-the-tops earned him an 8.50 and victory over Jack Perry (Aus), former Mr Price Pro Champion Beto Fernandes (Brz) and Wade Goodall (Aus).

On a whole, the Brazilian contingent pulled together as the most dominant nation on the day with Daison Pereira, Pablo Paulino and Robson Santos leading the charge of 13 surfers who advanced into the next round. While Pereira earned the heat win over 2005 World Junior Champion Pablo Paulino (Brazil) in heat 14, it was Paulino’s explosive, futuristic style that made him another one of the day’s top scorers executing an excellent 8-point ride.

Throwing caution to the wind, Paulino landed a big front side aerial reverse, straining his ligaments and causing a mild joint sprain to his knee. Carried up the beach by his friends in excruciating pain, Paulino had his leg iced and bandaged by the medical team on hand and despite doctors orders to rest, has confirmed that he will attempt to continue with the competition.

The South African contingent faired fairly well with six surfers advancing into the men’s round of 144. Mens trials winner Justin Sanders (Durban) was the only other South African surfer, besides Smith, to win his heat taking out Izuki Tanaka (Japan); Andre Silva (Brazil) and Anthony Walsh (Aus).

Junior surfers Brandon Jackson (Durban North), Brett Shearer (Cape Town) and Dave Richards (Cape Town) surprised all by finishing second in their respective heats, all three surfers advancing into the next round. Other South Africans to advance, were South Coast power surfer Frankie Obherholzer (Warner beach) and Durban youngster Mathew Kruger.

The event resumes tomorrow with the men’s round of 144 followed by the women’s trials.

The action is broadcast live on www.mrpricepro.com.
