Freezing Weather and Red-hot Surfing at the Roxy Surf Jam East London

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 July, 2006 : - - Despite the cold snap that has been holding a tight grip on the East Coast, the girls competing in the Roxy Surf Jam in East London really lit up. Held in good but frigid conditions at Nahoon Mouth, the girls didn't let any of the elements dampen their spirits and tore into the waves.

Two to three-foot fun contestable conditions were the order of the day, with Tarryn Chudleigh and Bianca Buitendag being the event stand-outs. Without top surfers Rosy Hodge and Nikita Robb in attendance, some of the divisions were wide open and the girls took full competitive advantage.

The waves were small and fun, with mainly left-handers coming through, allowing the girls to really cut loose. Tarryn Chudleigh opted for the slightly longer right-handers, surfing on her backhand, and her plan paid handsomely.

"It was quite hard conditions, really small and cold," said Chudleigh after the event. "I went for the rights coz they seemed a bit longer." Chudleigh was quick to claim her competitors, despite her victories.

"Heidi palmboom was also ripping, and Alice MacGregor was on fire in the early heats. It was a cool event." Chudleigh was the winner in the U16 and U20 divisions, beating Chantelle Rautenbach and Alice MacGregor in the U16 final, and Telana Flanagan and Chantelle Rautenbach in the U20 division.

Another surfer who really stood out was Bianca Buitendag of Victoria Bay. The other surfers at the event named her as one of the best surfers at the event. "It was dumping quite a lot at the low tide, but I managed to get a couple of good rights just next to the rip," said Bianca, already on her way back home to George with her dad, former top provincial surfer Colin Buitendag.

"It was a really fun event, and I'm looking forward to the next event in Cape Town." Bianca was victorious in the U18 division, beating Amber Kilfoil and Katie Goldriech, and finished runner-up to Heidi Palmboom in the very competitive U14 division.

Heidi Palmboom took out the U14 division to continue her domination of this division. Other stand-outs of the event were Katie Goldreich from Durban and Telana Flanagan surfing in her home town East London.

The next Roxy Surf Jam is in Cape Town on the 2-3 September, and it will have a roaming venue.
