Saltrock County Sligo Open Rocks the Holiday Weekend
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 August, 2006 : - - The saltrock Co.Sligo open kicked off early Saturday morning, where the 100 strong competitors were greeted with 2ft contestable conditions at Strandhill. The promenade overlooking the the beach proved the perfect vantage point for the crowds of spectators who were treated to an incredible show of surfing throughout the bank holiday weekend!
A new professional computerised judging system was also put through its paces for the first time and proved an invaluable resource, along with world renowned judge Pascal Devine ensured every heat was judged with minimal error.
The open surf event was as hotly contested as ever, with reigning Saltrock champ, David O Donnell hoping to regain his title, however with a shock defeat along with Colin O Hare the door was left wide open for Mike Morgan who won the final convincingly followed by local lad Stephen kilfeather 2nd, Fergal Smith 3rd and Eoin McCarty Deering 4th.
Following in the footsteps of younger brother, Nicole Morgan blitzed her way through the final to clinch first spot in the women’s division, followed by Clodagh Finnegan of Strandhill who posted her highest ever contest ranking at this event, Tahlia Britton and Aine O Donnell finished 3rd and 4th respectively.
The Bodyboard event proved to be the closest final of the event with local boys Shane Meehan and Andrew Kilfeather locked in a close battle with Paul and Darragh McCarter from Bundoran, with less than 2 points separating all four competitors the judges had their work cut out, and in the end Kilfeather clinched the title ahead of Shane in 2nd leaving Darragh and Paul on 3rd and 4th.
The Longboard event saw Stevie Burns once again take another longboard title, with some powerful progressive surfing on the 9ft board.
Due to the amount of junior surfers in Co. Sligo surf club it was only fitting that the youngsters were given a chance to show what they have to offer and so U-16 surf and body board event were also held. Wonder kid Aaron Reid surfed with style and backed it up with plenty of flashy moves to clinch 1st place ahead of Peter Clyne 2nd, David Bannon 3rd and N.Groves 4th.
Redie not settling for the surf title grabbed a bodyboard and surfed his way into 1st once again ahead of favourites Rory O’ Dowd, Charlie Cooper and Oran McGovern. www.isasurf.ie www.saltrock.com
