World Champion Constable Heads Star-studded Field - '06 Na Papa Queensland Longboard Titles
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 August, 2006 : - - Sunshine Coast’s newly-crowned World Longboarding champion Josh Constable (Peregian beach) heads a talented group of Queensland’s finest longboard surfers that are set to converge onto the Gold Coast to contest the Na Papa Queensland Longboard Titles on the weekend of August 19th-20th, 2006.
Surfers from as far north as Yeppoon to as south as Coolangatta are set to battle it out for prestigious Queensland titles over 11 divisions. Moreover, teams from the northern region, Sunshine Coast and the hosts Gold Coast will hotly contest the two-day event in hope of qualifying for the Golden Breed Australian Longboard Titles to be held at Yallingup, Western Australia (WA) from the 15th – 22nd October, 2006.
As of last year’s longboard delegates meeting at the Golden Breed Australian Longboard Titles, no longer do the top 16 Australian Longboard Circuit (ALC) automatically qualify for the Australian Longboard Titles. For that reason, open competitors, including Constable must qualify through this weekend’s titles to compete at the ‘06 Australian Longboard Titles.
The strong contingent of Sunshine Coast open surfers, including ’06 Na Papa Sunshine Coast Regional champion Grant Thomas (Maroochydore), ’05 Under 18 Australian Longboard champion Harrison Roach (Sunshine beach), ’05 Over 35 Men’s Australian Longboard champion Damien Coulter (Mooloolaba), Brett White (Noosa) and the always formidable Constable (2-times Open Men’s Australian Longboard champion) will be looking to stamp their authority over their southern counterparts.
Fresh from his world-beating victory, Constable has his sights firmly set on claiming a prestigious Na Papa Queensland Longboard Titles Open Men’s crown. Constable won the 2006 ASP Men’s World Longboard Championships in late June, defeating Ned Snow from Hawaii in a very closely contested man-on-man final in Costa Rica.
The Gold Coast has again posted a strong team into this year’s event and will look to perform well in their home surf. Jackson Close, Currumbin beach surfer and former Australian Longboard champion shapes up as a major threat to Constable's title hopes in the open men’s division. Similarly, Mark McNamara (Currumbin) and Oliver Shaw (Coolagatta) will provide strong opposition in the open men’s field.
The ’06 Na Papa Queensland Longboard Titles has under 18 boy’s, over 35, over 40, over 45, over 50, over 55 and over 60 and open men’s divisions, as well as under 18 girl’s, over 35 and open women divisions.
