TITLE FAVOURITES TURN IT ON FOR DAY 2 OF THE RIP CURL PRO JUNIOR IN FRANCE

Version Francais dessous

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 August, 2006 : - - Day 2 of the Rip Curl Pro Junior in Hossegor, France was full of action as the 2 star contest moved through Rounds 3 and 4 in tricky 3ft to 4ft (1.5m) surf. Although the swell had dropped since yesterday the quality of surfing continued to increase as competition sets up for a classic final day at Plage Nord Estagnots tomorrow.

Event favourites dominated the day, headlined by Damian Fahrenfort (ZAF), Vincent Duvignac (FRA), TJ Barron (HAW), Dion Atkinson (AUS), Hank Gaskell (USA) and Tanner Gudauskas (USA).

Although some surfers such as Damian Fahrenfort (ZAF) have surfed four times since the start of the event, seeded surfer Vincent Duvignac (FRA) saw his first piece of action this afternoon in Round 4. The local hope started slowly, but an 8.5 scoring ride late in the heat shot him to first and through to Round 5.

“The waves are difficult but I've got a good board and I knew I had to go for big moves and big spray and stay fluid,” explained Duvignac. “I watched the right for four hours before my heat and I knew it would offer a better wall and was more rippable than the left.” Duvignac will face fellow countryman Nathan Curren (FRA), Nicolas Von Rupp (GER) and Maxime Huscenot (REU) in Heat 2 of Round 5.

Huscenot scored a deserved spot in Round 5 after finishing second to Fahrenfort in Heat 1 of Round 3 to knock out defending champion Arthur Bourbon (GLP).

“I saw that right before paddling out and thought it would be a good option,” explained Huscenot, whose top score in the heat was an 8.33. “It looked hollow enough and with less chops than on the left. I waited for a set wave and got all the way down to the beach. After that score I knew I just needed another good score to advance.”

It was a successful day for American surfers today, with Dylan Graves (USA), Hank Gaskell (USA) and Tanner Gudauskas (USA) all recording very high scores to advance to Round 5. Graves posted 15.83 points in his heat win, while Gaskell and Gudauskas batted for top honors in heat 5 – Gaskell eventually winning out with 17.74 points ahead of second placed Gudauskas with 15.73.

Sunday is the final day of the Rip Curl Pro Junior and event organizers are confident of running the finals in very competitive waves tomorrow afternoon. All Pro Junior surfers still competing will meet at the Hossegor contest site tomorrow morning for an 8am call on competition. The European Rip Curl GromSearch Final will also be held tomorrow, crowning the male and female European GromSearch champions.
