Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 August, 2006 : - - The sun was eventually back when we got on the contest site at 8 AM this morning, the warm air pleasing everyone for the last day of competition. With only Foster’s men’s World Tour surfer still in the race to the title, the WQS warriors had already done a great job so far, and it could be felt the pressure had definitely settled around the competitors area. Listening to his MP3, Jérémy Flores (Fra) watched the first heat of the day concentrating on the line up to chose the best option for his 30 minute heat.
The waves were cleaner than yesterday but still small 2 to 3 ft high and it looked pretty difficult to find some connecting sections. A few waves were actually breaking and in order to wait for the best ones, Nathan Carrol (Haw) and Leonardo Neves (Bra) looked under pressure out there. Carrol opened the heat with a 6.83 pointer but spent the rest of the heat waiting for a good back up score that came just in the last minute, after trying his best on a 2 ft soft wave that gave him the 3.83 he needed to adavance to the semifinals.
The “De souza VS Flores” clash followed up and the two young rising stars chose to split on two different peaks at the outside; Adriano was the first one to find good quality sections to push his board with power. Jérémy then found the bomb of the heat, surfing a righthander from the outside to the shore, linking some radical snapped cutbacks to score the best wave of the event with a 9.87 pointer. The ocean then played with our young men’s nerves, offering fewer options to answer one another; patience became the third man of the heat, until the last five seconds when Adriano took off for a 7.45 to finish with a small air reverse 360; the crowd went silent and the 7.1 came out of the judging tower, giving Jérémy another chance towards the highest step.

The Foster’s Men’s World Tour surfer Adriano left with a smile: “I’ve been doing good so far in Europe so I’m okay. It was a good heat I felt nervous on my last wave and I know Jérémy deserved it so I’m already looking forward to Hossegor where I’d like to repeat last year’s result,” said a very relaxed Adriano. Jonathan Gonzales (Cny) was the other european to surf in the quarterfinals against in form coming back Mick Campbell (Aus). The incoming tide brought some better waves and the guys offered a great show to the crowd. More and more waves came in, the surfers finding some better scores for a very close and intense battle. The former ASP World #2 Mick Campbell eventually wrapped up the result with three radical off-the-lips at the inside.
The semifinals started straight after Ricky Basnett (Zaf) had qualified against Rodrigo Dornelles (Bra). And the public’s favourite just offered again some enternainment, starting the heat with a 9 pointer straight away to set the tone. Getting more and more confident, the 18 year old man started surfing more waves showing 21 year old Nathan Carroll (Haw) he was ready to battle as much as needed. Waiting for the best sets, the red and white knights went on a duel and the priority strategy made it even more interesting until the last seconds, Jérémy using the rule to keep his lead and reach the final after backing up his score with a 6. Nathan Carroll still got his best result so far on a 6 Star WQS event and is still adding experience to his young career. “It’s my second year on the WQS and it’s been an up and down year.
I’m just trying to get as much points as possible to get further on the seedings and have more and more chances to reach my goal, which is the World Championship Tour,” said the Sunset beach local. “I’ll be at the Super Series from tomorrow and try and stay in the same frame of mind, relaxed but focused,” finished the hawaiian who leaves with 1825 pts and $3 750. The last Aussie of the event Mick Campbell (Aus) used his man-on-man experience to smuther south african Ricky Basnett (Zaf) in a very close heat where only small scores came in, but where positioning and strategy made the result.

FINAL Jérémy Flores (Fra) in Red – 2nd VS Michael Campbell (Aus) in White – 1st
It was a generation clash that took place in Lacanau for the Final of the 27th edition of the Sooruz Lacanau Pro presented by PlayStation. On the one hand Mick Campbell, 32 years old former 1998 ASP World #2 behing Kelly Slater; on the other hand Jérémy Flores, 18 years old 2005 Junior ASP Europe Champion. The two men looked relaxed before entering the water for the last heat of the event, a 35 minute decider which started at 2.15 PM. In soft 2 ft waves, the best surfers of the contest brought a lot of people on the beach.
Mick opened the battle with a good 6.83 after some efficient classic and powerful off-the-lips, Jérémy answering with a throw-away score. With fifteen minutes remaining, the young gun looked a bit nervous whereas Mick was taking off to take a 7+ score that gave him the lead. Four minutes before the hooter, Jérémy went on a lefthander to link three huge radical re-entries up to the shore by the time the aussie was still waiting for a set wave. In he last minute, the reunion island surfer rushed again to try and get the 7.2 points needed as the whole crowd was cheering to push him further. After huge efforts, the scores appeared on the speaker’s computer leaving Mick ahead to secure first win of the year in this 6 Star WQS event.
“So stoked to get back for a win. It’s been a great year so far and getting a win in the european leg is just all I needed to move ahead in the ratings,” said the experienced champion. “Congratulations to Jérémy for going on such a year, it’s just so amazing for him and I hope we’ll meet next year in the top 45,” finished a smiling Mick, who grabs 5th place on the international ratings with 8492 pts.

Our runner-up still said a few words. “I am so happy for french and european surfing as I feel a lot of things could change the way it’s going, said Jérémy. “We are more and more to knock on the WCT doors and if I make it this year I hope I won’t be alone. There’s still a lot of events but the european leg is crucial and it’s going good for sure for many of us,” finished the new WQS leader with 9444 pts and a $7500 cheque before the Super Series.
