Big names eliminated on Day 1   (Version Francais au dessous)

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 August, 2006 : - - The 20th annual Rip Curl Pro Super Series WQS launched into action in Hossegor, France today with several major upsets headlining a solid day of Round 1 competition.Conditions were ideal in the morning with offshore winds and clean 3ft surf on offer until the wind changed and high tide kicked in this afternoon.

The local crowd on site for the 9.30am start were kept happy early when French youngster Pierre Valentin LaBorde finished second to Matt Jones (AUS) in heat 1 to advance through Round 1. The 15-year-old recorded a two-wave combined heat score of 12.06 points to finish ahead of higher seeds Yerin Brown (AUS) and Mike Todd (USA) in third and fourth respectively.

LaBorde won the European Rip Curl GromSearch Final yesterday and was obviously wrapt to earn a spot in Round 2 of the year’s biggest WQS tomorrow. “I am really happy to finish second and get to the next round,” he said. “The waves are good and it was hard, but I got a good score on my last wave.”

The teenager will be hoping his strong form continues tomorrow when he faces some very stiff competition in the form of Drew Courtney (AUS), Dane Gudauskas (USA) and former ISA World Junior Champion Ben Dunn (AUS) in heat 2 of Round 2.

Heat 2 produced another upset today when Gudauskas and Abdel El Harim (MAR) eliminated higher seeds Rhys Bombaci (AUS) and Warwick Wright (ZAF). Only 0.33 points separated second placed El Harim from third placed Wright, but a win is a win and the Moroccan was happy to be through to Round 2. “I am stoked, because it was so close,” said El Harim. “The conditions are hard, but there are good ones coming through if you’re patient.”

Round 1 action heated up in the middle of the day when Romain Laulhe (FRA) and 2005 Rip Curl Pro Super Series runner-up Odirlei Coutinho (BRA) lit things up in heat 10. Laulhe posted a near-perfect 9.57 (the day’s highest score) on his first wave en route to a day-high 18.57 two-wave score. The Anglet local advanced to Round 2 with Coutinho, who posted 17.34 points to finish in second.

“It was a crazy heat and I’m so stoked to get two nine-point rides in one heat,” said Laulhe. “I didn’t feel too good when I paddled out, but once I got that first wave I felt way more relax and free, and my level of confidence went up. Then I just sat in the same spot and got the other nine."

Former Rip Curl Pro Super Series champion Rob Machado (USA) paddled out as favourite in heat 11, but his 2006 contest was ended quickly by Andre Silva (BRA) and Ruben Gonzalez (PRT). A vocal crowd showed a lot of support for Machado, but the legend goofy-footer could only tally 10.77 points to finish in third overall.

Three-time world champion Tom Curren (USA) suited up against Patrick Gudauskas (USA), Guilherme Herdy (BRA) and Hank Gaskell (HAW) in heat 12, but suffered the same fate as Machado in the tricky conditions. Gaskell surfed a freak heat, only catching two waves on his way to winning the heat.

Today’s small conditions were somewhat similar to most surf beaches in Brazil and Brazilian surfers faired very well throughout the first round. The list of Brazilians advancing through to Round 2 today includes Marcelo Trekinho, Gustavo Fernandes, Jean da Silva, Pablo Paulino, Hizunome Bettero, Odirlei Coutinho, Andre Silva and James Santos.

Fernandes and Coutinho were the two standouts of the group, lodging the day’s second and third highest heat scores respectively in their wins. Fernandes’ 17.50 featured a 9-point ride, while Coutinho’s 17.34 featured a 9.27 ride.

The high tide eventually deteriorated conditions and contest officials eventually stopped Round 1 after heat 19. Tomorrow’s morning check-in will take place at 8.00am, with competition starting at 8.30am (conditions pending). The remaining five Round 1 heats will be held first, with former World Tour surfer Tom Carroll (USA) competing heat 24.
