High Flying Chacon Shoots the Moon at Cronulla

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 August, 2006 : - - Aerial Assassin Alex Chacon of Avalon punted his way to victory in the Kustom ‘Shoot the Moon’ Demo Day at Cronulla. In clean, but small waves at Cronulla’s famed ‘Alley’ rip-bowl, Chacon showed that the ‘Best Kustomised Maneuver’ prize he picked up earlier in the year at the Gold Coast Billabong Pro Teen was no fluke, landing a huge Indy Grab 180 spin to take out the event.

In the man-on-man final, Tim Taplin of East Lynne showed he was no slouch in the air landing a well-executed Alley-Oop but is was not enough to pip Chacon, who took home a very sweet Kustom pack for his efforts. Earlier in the day Cronulla locals Jordan Widenstom and Luke Weinert got some sweet air conditions progressing through to the Semi-Finals but came unstuck against the more superior Chacon and Taplin.

Running concurrently with the open expression session was the Kustom Team-Rider Session, pitting top Kustom riders against each other. The strong Cronulla crowd was treated to some aerial wizardry as the boys went crazy landing a plethora of aerial variations.

In the end it was Manly’s Paul Evens who got the judges approval, riding out of a massive Alley-Oop to out-point local Cronulla hero Dylan Hannah’s double grab and Chris ‘Chippa’ Wilson’s smooth 360 spin. The next stop on the Kustom ‘Shoot the Moon’ aerial mission is the Gold Coast on September 2, 2006.

The Kustom 'Shoot the Moon' Demo Days are all part of the Kustom 'Shoot the Moon' aerial quest, a quest for the biggest documented aerial move landed this winter.

The incentive for both surfer and photographer to capture the footage is massive with a prize purse of $10,000 AUD going to the surfer completing the best aerial maneuver, along with a return air ticket to Hawaii courtesy of Hawaiian Airlines. The person who captures the footage will take home $3000 cash, a Panasonic video camera and an air ticket to Hawaii.

The Kustom ‘Shoot the moon’ competition kicked off on the 1st June and is a 4 month quest to capture the biggest, most innovative aerial maneuver. Ending on 29 September, entrants will need to capture a surfer completing an aerial maneuver either on video or stills and send their submissions to Australia’s Surfing Life magazine for judging.

The rules are simple in that the surfer has to ‘land’ the aerial maneuver for it to count! Jet-Ski assisted submissions will be considered. Entrants and surfing enthusiasts can follow the progress of the competition online at the Shoot the Moon website. The Kustom ‘Shoot the Moon’ Experience is proudly supported by Hawaiian Airlines, Panasonic, MTV & Australia’s Surfing Life Magazine.
