Fun Waves and Great Weather for Roxy Surf Jam in Cape Town
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 September, 2006 : - - The third of the Roxy Surf Jam events presented by Peugeot and Samsung kicked off today with some great weather, fun waves and hot surfing in Cape Town. The swell was in the fun, three-foot range at Long Beach with strong offshore winds, and the girls were able to cut loose on the long left-handers.
Early stand-outs included Lisa Mace (CT) and Sarah Baum (DBN), who both managed to string together some tight turns to score the big points. Rosy Hodge (EL) and Tarryn Chudleigh (Scarborough) were ripping in the U20 division, as was Caylin de Reuck (Melkbos).
There was a bit of drama on the beach around lunch time, as apparently a massive Great White shark was spotted at Dunes, a wave fairly close to Long Beach, where the girls were surfing. The NSRI patrolled the backline at Long Beach for a while, to make sure that the shark didn't cruise towards where the girls were surfing.
Tonite sees the sees the premier of the new Roxy DVD, Shimmer. The DVD will be screened at 18h30 for 19h00, on a big screen at the Kommetjie Primary School Hall, Kommetjie Road, in Kommetjie. Drinks and snacks will be provided by Roxy. The premier promises to be a fun evening, and is open to anyone who wants to come and watch.
The waves look set to be good again tomorrow, with the wind staying in the south-east and the swell predicted to pick up. At this stage it looks set to be out at Long Beach again, but the decision as to the venue for the day will be made tomorrow morning.
This is the third Surf Jam of the year, with the final event on the Roxy calendar being the Roxy Wahine Cup in Durban, the biggest stand-alone girls event in the country. The Roxy Surf Jams are extremely popular amongst the female surfers in South Africa, and are proving to be a great springboard to launch our girls onto the Pro Tour.
The Roxy Surf Jam contests will be covered by Boardriders TV, the innovative lifestyle boardsports TV program which is broadcast extensively on Supersport. The Roxy Surf Jam Series, presented by Peugeot and Samsung, is proudly supported by Saltwater Girl, Mentos and Roxy Eyewear.
The Roxy Surf Jams are sanctioned by Surfing South Africa (SSA), the governing body for the sport in South Africa, while the U20 category is also accredited by ASP Africa.
