    Roxy Surf Jam Event 3

    Surfing South Africa
    Cape Town, South Africa
    2 - 3 September 2006

Excellent Conditons and Great Surfing at Roxy Surf Jam presented by Peugeot and Samsung.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 September, 2006 : - - Despite the howling south-easter, the waves at Long Beach stayed good and contestable for the final day of the Roxy Surf Jam, and all the girls were ripping in their heats . Clean three-foot lefts and rights were coming through consistently throughout the day, and the girls were tearing them apart all the way through to the notorious Long Beach shorebreak.

Cutting loose in the earlier rounds was current WQS number 8 Rosy Hodge, who wasn't fazed in the least by the cold water and windy conditions. Hailing from East London, Rosy is used to the harsh elements coming into play whenever she goes for a surf. Another surfer who was giving it plenty of stick was Chantelles Rautenbach from Melkbosstrand, also completely at home in the conditions. Kommetjie ripper Holly Armstrong used her local knowledge of Long Beach to find good waves in her heats as well, showing some of the out-of-towners how to surf the sometimes tricky waves of her homel break.

In the U14 final Sarah Baum found her rhythm and managed a convincing win against some stiff competition.
"It was quite choppy out there at first, but it got a bit better later on in the heat," said Sarah after the final. "I caught a few lefts but my rights were better. I managed to get a few more turns in on them. It was so cold out there though. My hands went pink."

The U16 final was a close battle, with Chantelle Rautebach getting the better waves and scores over fierce competitor Tarryn Chudleigh. Adele Nortjie proved that she is a force to be reckoned with by placing third.

It was another Capetonian, Lis Mace, who was victorious in the U18 division. Amber Kilfoil was a close second, with Morag Steele placing a solid third behind her. Lisa Mace had two really good scores, as well as two good back-up scores, to take the win.

In the U20 divison a determined Chantelle Rautebach took victory over Rosy Hodge, scoring an excellent two rides of an eight-pointer and a nine.
"I fell off on a few waves right in the beginning, but then i got that good left and scored my nine," said a stoked Chantelle afterwards. "It was cold and windy out there, but it didn't worry me 'coz I'm from Melkbos. The girls from Melkbos are tough haha."
Chantelle beat Rosy Hodge, Holly Armstrong and the young Heidi Palmboom into the minor placings.
A great performance from Chantelle, taking the two divisions. She was showing strong levels of fitness, and her surfing was looking inspired throughout the event.

The next event on the Roxy calendar is the Roxy Wahine Cup, which takes place at Casino Beach in Durban in December. It is the biggest stand-alone girls surfing event in the country.
