    Havaiana’s Beachley Classic

ASP WCT Womens Event # 6
    Manly Beach Sydney, Australia
    9 - 15 October

Surfing Action Galore for Sydney 2007 WCT Qualifier Gilmore in Class Trials

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 September, 2006 : - - Manly may not be Teahupoo but Sydney is still in for some red-hot surfing action with the Havaiana’s Beachley Classic, ASP women’s world tour event in October.

The tight title race between laid-back frontrunner Melanie Redman-Carr (Aus), six time world champion Layne Beachley (Aus) and defending world champion Chelsea Georgeson (Aus) leaves the top three no room for error in the third last event of the season.

Sydney’s own Jessi Miley-Dyer (Bronte, NSW) and Brazilian power-house Silvana Lima will continue their blow by blow battle for Rookie of the Year and 2007 ASP World Tour qualifier Stephanie Gilmore (Aus) will headline arguably the toughest trials fields ever assembled for a ASP Women’s World Championship Tour (WCT) event.

The NSW, Kingscliff teenager is the only newcomer so far assured of qualifying for next years elite world tour via the World Qualifying Series (WQS) currently ranked at no.2 behind Miley-Dyer.

The 18 year-old knows how formidable the twelve girl field of future stars and former champions is stating, “It’s ridiculous. The trials are going to be as hard as the main event, the field is stacked and there’s only one wildcard on offer. I’ve only been in one ‘CT (WCT) this year and I need to get more experience for next year. I really want to win the trials and I’m feeling good, but it’s going to be tough.”

“Layne’s event has been the talk of the tour everyone is excited about it. She’s awesome. She has done so much for the sport already and to be a part of this is just great. The way that Layne has put this event together is inspiring,” added Gilmore.

The line-up is WQS no.6 ranked surfer Leilani Gryde (USA), 1993 world champion Pauline Menczer (Brunswick Heads, NSW),ISA world champion Pauline Ado (Fra), ASP world junior runner-up Nicola Atherton (Bronte, NSW), U/16 National Champion and ISA world champion runner-up Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa, NSW), 2006 ASP Australasian Junior Champion Airini Mason (NZ), Australian Grommet Champion Kirra Townsend (Sawtell, NSW), runner-up Australian Grommet Titles Angela Keighren (Mullaway, N,SW), third Australian Grommet Titles Melissa Burt (Phillip Island, Vic), fourth Australian Grommet Titles Jess Grimworld (Bateau Bay, NSW) and local star Elle Black are the invited Beachley Trialists.

The Beachley Trials will be staged on October 9th at Manly Beach with the wildcard winner straight up against current world no.1 Melanie Redman-Carr and another yet to be named surfer in the opening non-elimination round of the Havaiana’s Beachley Classic.
