Surfer arrested after surf rage attack at Hau`ula Beach

Man Arrested In Alleged Surf Rage Attack

Victim Suffers Shattered Eye Socket In Attack

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 September, 2006 : - - HAU`ULA, Hawaii -- Police arrested a surfer after an attack in the waters of Hau`ula Beach on Sunday that left another man with a shattered eye socket. Police said that the case is puzzling because the victim has no idea why the other man attacked him, and now fears more violence.

Body surfers at Pounders in Hau`ula said that the beach is not known for being a violent surf spot. "All the time I body surfed out here, I only saw one fight. I never saw too much trouble out here," body surfer Harlan Kahawaii said.

It happened shortly after a 19-year-old man arrived at the beach. The two men were in the water when something sparked a surf-rage incident, causing one man to punch the other in the face. The attacker then held the victim under water, police said. The victim is an Oahu resident who doesn't know his attacker or why the man wanted to hurt him, police said.

The victim ended up with a shattered eye socket. The man said he thought he was going to drown before breaking free. One day after the attack, police arrested Darren Iese, 27.

The incident has left body surfers wondering what went wrong. "The waves don't get that great here, it never gets that crowded so it's more just a friendly spot. North Shore and Sandy (Beach) are definitely more aggressive, where people are trying to get waves and compete for waves," body surfer Josh Frager said.
