Rizal Tanjung “Mr. Consistent” Is Indonesia’s Number One Pro Surfer Of 2006.
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 October, 2006 : - - Kuta-Bali: A month shy of his 31st birthday, Rizal Tanjung has just added the title of Indonesia’s Number One professional surfer of 2006 to his already extensive list of firsts.
Riz was obviously tired of holding the runner-up spot in the ISC series for the past two years, as he jumped into the points lead quickly with wins in the first two ISC events of the year, the first at the Quiksilver Pro at Keramas in May and the second a month later at the Rusty “Rumble in the Jungle” at Uluwatu and then never looked back, cementing his hold on first place with two third place finishes and a final 5th place finish to end up with 8,650 points, 1,550 points ahead of runner-up Lee Wilson (7,100 points) at the end of the season.
Rizal has a history of making firsts in his surfing life; the first and only Indonesian win a World Grommet title (at age 16) and an ASP WQS (Association of Surfing Professionals World Qualifying Series) contest, just to mention two. He has traveled extensively, from the remote corners of the globe to popular surf mecca’s such as Hawaii’s North Shore, essentially acting as Indonesia’s surf ambassador to the rest of the world.
You would be hard pressed to find a professional surfer who during the last 10 years has not either surfed with, surfed against, or simply met Rizal Tanjung. He has truly carried the name of Indonesia and Bali to the far corners of the earth. But what does Riz think about his latest achievement? “I’m very stoked, so stoked. It’s been a great year for me.
Being consistent is what makes me stoked, rather than getting a win in one contest and then getting knocked out early in the next one. In the 2004 and 2005 seasons I came in second, but this year it all came together for me” he said. Then he added “It’s also really great because it shows how far Indonesian surfing has come, another first for me and something I can be proud of”.
He attributes his continued drive to win to his wife Chandra and his son Varun, saying that Varun always asks him after every contest if he won, and just doesn’t want to disappoint the little guy! We’re proud of you Rizal and congratulations from all of us, the members and staff of the ISC as well as the entire surf community in Indonesia.
