Selborne College wins Reef Wetsuits SA Schools Championships
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 October, 2006 : - - Selborne College from the Border won the Reef Wetsuits SA Schools Championships at Nahoon Beach, East London, on Sunday, defeating defending champions Northwood (Durban), Durban High and Amanzimtoti in the final of the Tag Team format.
Selborne, who had to qualify through the repecharge semi-final to reach the grand final, racked up an impressive 152.6 points to easily overcome the challenge of the Northwood, who had won every heat they contested earlier in the event.
Although there are no individual titles at stake, Selborne’s Clinton Gravett, a member of the SA junior surfing team, received the Surfer of the Contest award after contributing the highest accumulated points (24.9 out of a possible 30) to his team’s total and also producing the highest scoring single – a near perfect 9.5 points out of a possible 10.
The event featured 15 schools teams and started in light onshore winds on Saturday that increased during the day, making surfing conditions difficult. Sunday saw offshore winds and head-high waves enabling the likes of Kyle Lane (Northwood), Chad du Toit (Durban High) and Klee Strachan (Amanzimtoti) to guide their teams to the finals.
Late replacements, Umzumbe High School from the Post Shepstone area, acquitted themselves well, winning their second round repecharge heat before being eliminated in round three to take 11th place overall.
