DAY ONE RESULTS: 2006 LOST ENERGY DRINK ISA WORLD SURFING GAMES
33 Nations Represented in First Day of Competition for the Open Longboard and Bodyboard Divisions

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 October, 2006 : - - Huntington Beach, Calif., October 15, 2006 – Competition began today for the 2006 Lost Energy Drink ISA World Surfing Games with the Open Longboard and Bodyboard divisions. Spirits were high amongst the 33 competing teams, with the waves breaking from 2-4 feet making the wave selection crucial for the World’s finest as they battled it out on behalf of their respective countries. 

“We are very impressed with the level of competition amongst the all the teams,” said International Surfing Association Contest Director Marcos Bukao. “We expect bigger and better waves over the next couple of days and this will determine the outcome of who carries through to the next heats.” 

Over the first two qualifying rounds, the Open Longboard division called for a combination of traditional techniques and modern day tricks. Registered with the highest combined two-wave score of 14.60, Matthew Moir of South Africa led the pack earning the highest score of the competition with an 8.5 with his speed, solid noseriding and massive floaters.  His performance was then followed by a surprise second place score by the United Kingdom’s Benjamin Skinner with an impressive  combined 14.50. Three-time World Champion Colin McPhillips of the United States finished with the third highest combined score of 14.0.  

Other countries that delivered high-calibered performances were Bruno Grandela of Portugal and Martin Perez of Argentina. Complete results are available at www.isasurf.org.  

At Podium 2 on the south side of the beach, the Bodyboard Men and Women divisions showcased the highest level of waveriding in the world.   The waves picked up in the afternoon with some head high sets, setting the stage for solid scores from Portugal, Australia, and Venezuela.  Portugal put up the days highest combined score with a remarkable 14.50, followed by Andrew Lester of Australia with a 14.17 and Venezuela in third with a 13.0 combined score. Also Japan did not disappoint with their trademark big aerials and solid landings. 

 ”I took off on a nice wave and got three barrel rolls back to back and then the fourth came through,” said Manuel Centerio of Portugal. “I love the color and the spirit of the WSG contest environment because it is about a group energy.”  

In the Women’s Bodyboarding competition Neymara Carvalho of Brazil posted the days combined high with a 14.17, followed by Rita Pires of Portugal with a 12.33 and defending Champion Kira Llewellyn in third with 11.27. 

ISA President Fernando Aguerre said, “There is nothing like the World Surfing Games, the only surfing event in the world with surfers from all 5 continents. With the presence of the national flags, uniforms and all the languages and the teams mixed up and mingling around, this is it.”

COMIENZA LA ACCIÓN EN HUNTINGTON BEACH

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 October, 2006 : - - El primer día de competencia de los Juegos Mundiales Lost Energy Drink de Surf fue llevado a cabo con suceso en la legendaria playa de Huntington Beach que hoy amaneció soleada y con olas quebrando de dos a tres pies bien formadas. La primera y segunda ronda del evento principal de Longboard y la primera de Bodyboard Masculino y Femenino fueron realizadas en dos podios de forma simultánea.  

La excelente acción no tardó en comenzar, y ya en la primera serie del día, la mejor sumatoria de lo que va del campeonato fue realizada por el longboarder sudafricano Mathew Moir, quien supo escoger bien las olas y combinar en ellas lo mejor de la vieja y nueva escuela para establecer un total de 16.17 en sus dos mejores olas y vencer a José Manuel Cano de México –segundo-, Daniel Álvarez de República Dominicana –tercero- y Luciano Cherubini de Italia –cuarto-. Más adelante, en su serie de segunda ronda, el sudafricano repitió su gran actuación y garantizó su pasaje de forma invicta a tercera ronda.  

 Una vez fuera del agua, Moir declaró contento: “Me estoy sintiendo bien, estuve un poco nervioso en la segunda serie, estoy comenzando a acostumbrarme con mis tablas que han llegado ayer de noche. Tuve suerte de tomar las olas correctas y poder hacer las maniobras y completarlas”. Con respecto a la actuación y las expectativas de su equipo, el longboarder comentó: “Nuestro equipo está haciendo las cosas bien, todo se ve bien, tenemos un fuerte grupo de surfistas y espero que todos puedan ir adelante en el campeonato. Por mi parte, definitivamente quiero ganar el campeonato, he estado obteniendo terceros en otros eventos, por lo que espero que todo funcione bien para mí y así lograr vencer el Mundial”.  

Otros longboarders que consiguieron su pasaje de forma invicta a la tercera ronda fueron: el ex Campeón Mundial Bonga Perkins de Hawai y Harley Ingleby de Austalia. Por su parte, entre algunas de las sorprendentes derrotas del día, se encuentran la del representante brasilero Phil Rajzman y la del actual Campeón Panamericano, Roberto Mesa de Perú.  

Por el lado de los bodyboarders, fue el portugués Manuel Centeiro el destaque del día, quien, realizando tres radicales rollos en una potente izquierda, sumó la mejor ola del día -9.00-, que respaldó para también hacer el más alto score combinado de su categoría -14.5-. Una vez fuera del agua, Centeiro declaró: “He corrido bien, he estado en el lugar correcto a la hora cierta. Pude conseguir una buena ola al inicio y la aproveché bien, después, solamente tuve que sentir la situación. Estoy muy contento, esa ola fue muy buena y esperemos seguir adelante en el campeonato”. Le siguieron, con una gran actuación también, el australiano Andrew Lesler -14.17-, el español Álvaro Padrón -14.00- y el venezolano Alberto Colucci -13.00-.  

 La ex Campeona Mundial, Neymara Carvalho de Brasil, hizo respetar su condición estableciendo el score más alto de su categoría -14.17-, venciendo en su serie a Moe Watanabe de Japón –segunda- y Dominic Barona de Ecuador –tercera-. El segundo mejor score combinado de la categoría fue realizado por la portuguesa Rita Pires.  

Entre algunas de las sorpresas de las series de Bodyboard, el equipo norteamericano tuvo una mala jornada, consiguiendo clasificar solamente a uno de tres competidores en dicha categoría. El representante local Jeremy Right perdió contra el australiano Ben Gohl y el irlandés Shane Meehan. Mientras que Tara Parsons, no pudo contra la puertorriqueña Natasha Sagardia –primera- y la venezolana Ruth Parras –segunda-.   

Los Juegos Mundiales continúan mañana con la realización de todas las series de la primera ronda de la categoría Open. Se trata de la categoría que más puntaje brindará a los respectivos equipos en competencia. Desde las 8:00 a.m. –hora local- pueden seguir la acción de todo lo sucedido. Por ser un evento de doble eliminación, todavía todos los competidores de todos los países presentes tienen chances de lograr el campeonato por medio del repechaje.

Resumen de la actuación de los países hispanohablantes  

Argentina:
Debido a que Argentina no tiene representantes en la categoría Bodyboard, el único albiceleste en entrar al agua hoy fue el longboarder Martín Pérez, quien tuvo un muy buen desempeño. Logrando pasar en segundo lugar sus dos series, estando ahora escalado en la tercera ronda del evento principal. 

Chile:
Solamente un chileno ha entrado al agua el día de hoy sin lograr la clasificación. Se trata de Nicolás Penna, quien se ubicó en tercer lugar en su serie y ahora tendrá que enfrentar las rondas del repechaje. Los cuatro chilenos, representantes de la categoría Open, entrarán al agua mañana.  

Costa Rica:
No fue un buen primer día para el seleccionado tico. Los cuatro competidores que surfearon hoy, Walter Gatgens, Ivan Castillo y Lisbeth Vindas en Bodyboard, además de Diego Naranjo en Longboard, perdieron en sus series y ahora tendrán que vérselas en el repechaje.  

Ecuador: Ecuador tuvo una gran actuación en la categoría Bodyboard masculino hoy, con sus dos representantes clasificándose a la siguiente ronda; Jorge Maldonado en primero en su serie y Darwin Montes de Oca en segundo. Mientras que Dominic Barona y Oswaldo Borbor de las categorías Bodyboard Damas y Longboard, no lograron clasificarse, ubicándose terceros en sus respectivas series.   

España:
El equipo español tuvo un excelente desempeño en la categoría Bodyboard Masculino. Logrando que sus dos competidores se clasifiquen a la segunda ronda, con Álvaro Padron realizando el tercer mejor score combinado de la categoría. Por su parte, Marina Taylor, no corrió la misma suerte en su serie de Bodyboard Damas. Mientras tanto, Roberto Lorenzo, consiguió pasar en primer lugar su serie de primera ronda de Longboard, pero se ubicó en tercer lugar en la segunda, cayendo así al repechaje.  

Guatemala:
No fue un buen día para los guatemaltecos, de los dos competidores que entraron al agua, ambos perdieron; Pedro Vergara en Longboard y Henry Ambrosio en Bodyboard.  

México:
Los mexicanos tuvieron un buen día en la categoría Bodyboard Masculino con sus dos representantes, Edwin Morales y José Rutherford logrando la clasificación. Mientras tanto, el longboarder José Manuel Cano, consiguió pasar a la segunda ronda, en la que cayó más tarde al repechaje tras ubicarse tercero. Por su parte, la bodybarder Kenia León se ubicó en tercer lugar en su serie y por lo tanto bajó al repechaje.  

Panamá:
Ningún competidor panameño entró al agua hoy. Lo harán mañana con la realización de la categoría Open.  

Perú:
Los peruanos consiguieron que todos sus bodyboarders, Monica Narrea, Cesar Bauer y José Marsano pasaran sus series. Pero sufrieron la sorpresiva derrota del actual Campeón Panamericano de Longboard, Roberto Mesa.  

Puerto Rico:
Los boricuas tuvieron una excelente actuación en la categoría Bodyboard, logrando que todos sus representantes –Natasha Sagardia, Javier Baez y Rafael Rivera- pasaran sus respectivas series. Mientras que en Longboard, Esteban Miranda, perdió en la primera ronda.  

República Dominicana:
Los tres dominicanos que entraron al agua hoy perdieron sus series. Daniel Álvarez no consiguió pasar en la Longboard, mientras que lo mismo sucedió con Raúl Van Eiken y Michel Álvarez en Bodyboard.  

Venezuela:
Venezuela tuvo una buena actuación en la categoría Bodyboard, con sus tres representantes, Alberto Colucci, Pedro Rosario y Ruth Parra pasando a la siguiente ronda. Por su parte, el longboarder Gerhard Weilheim hizo un buen papel en su serie de primera ronda, pero se ubicó en cuarto en la segunda y así cayó al repechaje.
