DAY TWO RESULTS FOR THE OPEN MENS DIVISION AT THE 2006 LOST ENERGY DRINK ISA WORLD SURFING GAMES
France’s Joan Duru Posts Highest Heat Score in the First Qualifying Round of the Men’s Open Division
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 October, 2006 : - - Huntington Beach, Calif., – Day two of the 2006 Lost Energy Drink ISA World Surfing Games began today with the Men’s Open division where the top surfers of the world displayed tremendous talent amongst the 33 competing countries. All the competitors set their best foot forward with a constant execution of explosive tricks despite the slow sections within the 2 to 4 foot waves.
The morning began with 32 heats competing on both podiums and kicked off with Julian Wilson of Australia dominating heat one with a combined 12.47 score. Three intense heats highlighted the range of talent within the first Qualifying Round with French surfer Joan Duru, the 2006 ASP World Junior Champion, wowing judges in heat 11 and posting a huge 9.5 score bringing his combined score to the days high with a 17.67.
“It is great to hear that I got the highest combined score of the day. The conditions were not great but I love to surf amongst all of these WCT surfers,” said Duru.
Heat 12 was a solid battle with Chris Ward of the USA team grabbing some long rides and posting a combined score of 13.04, followed by Brazilian Jadson Andre whose impressive performance earned him a combined score of 11.34 moving both of them forward to the Qualifying Round two. Tatsuki Inoue of Japan and Freddy Roux, the only surfer from Cote D’Ivoire was knocked into the repercharge, but not before executing some solid snaps.

The USA and Australian teams continued to fare well through out the day as they dominated all of their heats. US surfing legend Pat O’Connell earning a 12.17 combined score leading heat 24, while Mexico’s Diego Cadena rounded out heat 32 with a remarkable 14.17.
In the Qualifying Round 2, heat three initiated the action with Damien Hobgood of the USA team and David Rutherfold of Mexico splitting a wave in the first ten minutes of the heat. It was a confident Alan Stokes of Great Britain who executed a chest high wave coming in second in the heat with a combined score of 9.80 knocking Eusebio Rodriguez of Ecuador into the Repercharge.
Heat 8 brought some more favorable waves with Hawaii’s Gavin Gillette of Kauai earning the days second high score 16.0, Australian Luke Stedman posting 14.56 followed by Alexandre Ferreira of Portugal and Maximiliano Siri entering the Repercharge.
Other high scores included heat 14 saw Miguel Ximenez of Portugal, a goofy foot rider take first with a solid 11.40 combined score followed by Armando Daltro of Brazil scoring a 10.90. About his heat Ximenez said,”the beach is awesome and the waves remind me of my home town of Lisbon. I am very excited about the upcoming heats.”
Conditions are expected to improve tomorrow with the Open Men’s Qualifying Round 3 and Repercharge 2. Also the Open Womens Qualifying Round 1 and Qualifying Round 2 begins tomorrow.

LOS MEJORES SURFISTAS DEL MUNDO ENTRAN AL AGUA EN HUNTINGTON
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 October, 2006 : - - Hoy fue un día muy importante para los Juegos Mundiales Lost Energy Drink de Surf, ya que la primera y segunda ronda de la categoría que más puntos brinda a sus equipos –Open- fue al agua. Las olas quebraron de dos a tres pies, con formación regular y series que demoraban en algunos momentos, haciendo que algunas de las disputas sean definidas por cortos márgenes.
El mejor puntaje del día fue realizado por el Campeón Europeo Junior, Joan Duru de Francia en su serie de primera ronda, estableciendo el total combinado más alto de lo que va del campeonato -17.67- y así también la mejor ola del mismo -9.5-, una izquierda en la que con mucha fluidez combinó varios off the lips y snaps, finalizando con un perfecto aéreo 360. En la segunda ronda, Duru repitió la buena actuación y pasó en primer lugar, garantizando así su lugar entre los 32 surfistas que se mantienen en el evento principal.
Una vez fuera del agua, el joven francés de solamente 17 años declaró: “Me estoy sintiendo muy bien, mi tabla está funcionando perfecta, quiero surfear y seguir adelante. Encontré esa ola que era muy buena y pude hacer las maniobras que quería. Es muy bueno competir con tu equipo, de esta forma podemos ver cómo estamos con respecto al resto del mundo”.
Por su parte, el hawaiano Gavin Gillete se encargó de hacer el segundo mejor puntaje del día, combinando un 8.5 y un 7.5 en sus dos mejores olas, surfeando fluido y arriesgando excelentes maniobras, venció al australiano Luke Stedman –segundo-, 26º ubicado en el WCT.
“Estaba un poco nervioso al comienzo, pero obtuve una buena izquierda al comienzo que me permitió hacer tres maniobras. Pensé que era un seis o un siete y me dieron un 8.5, luego de eso, la presión se fue y más tranquilo pude correr una buena derecha. Me siento muy bien y se siente excelente lograr hacer una serie como esta”, comentó Gillete luego de su serie.
El Campeón Mundial 2001 y ex representante de la selección norteamericana de surf, CJ Hobgood hizo respetar la casa, venciendo de forma sólida las dos series en las que entró. Con su característico estilo fluido de surfar, CJ aprovechó lo mejor de las pequeñas olas y se garantizó su lugar en la tercera ronda, haciendo también el tercer score combinado del día -14.94-.
Después de su serie, CJ comentó: “Estoy disfrutando muchísimo esto, me trae muchos recuerdos de los Juegos de diez años atrás, cuando estuvimos por acá disfrutando tanto; creo que es una parte de mi vida como surfista que nunca voy a olvidar. Quiero representar bien a mi país y que nos vaya bien y hacer que esas memorias se repitan”.
Con respecto a las diferencias entre un evento como este y un WCT, el norteamericano comentó: “Esto es amor puro, yo no estoy aquí para que me paguen por surfear, me gusta estar acá y ver gente de todos los países. Ves tanta multitud y te preguntas: dónde vi a esa persona alguna vez en el mundo y luego relacionas el nombre con la cara y es genial”.
Al día de hoy, con ocho atletas de cada equipo habiendo competido, el equipo australiano es el que se encuentra en mejor forma en la general, con todos sus atletas todavía formando parte del evento principal. Por su parte, Brasil y Estados Unidos ya tienen dos atletas en el repechaje. La situación de Brasil es un tanto peor, puesto que uno de los que cayeron al repechaje es de la categoría Open –Wigolly Dantas- que es la que brinda más puntaje para el ranking final por naciones. De todas formas, nada puede ser dicho hasta que las rondas del repechaje vayan al agua.
Los Juegos Mundiales Lost Energy Drink de Surf continúan mañana a las 8:00 a.m. –hora local- con la tercera ronda del evento principal de Open, la primera ronda del repechaje de dicha categoría y la primera y segunda ronda de Damas.
Resumen de la actuación de los países hispanohablantes
Argentina:
Tres competidores argentinos entraron al agua hoy. El primero en hacerlo fue Maximiliano Prensky, quien sorpresivamente no encontró sus olas en su serie y perdió contra Taumata Puhetini de Tahití y Nelson Oduber de Aruba. Por su parte, Martín Passeri y Maxi Siri, vencieron sus series de la primera ronda, pero no pudieron pasar sus series de la segunda y ahora esperan en el repechaje.
Chile:
No fue un buen día para el equipo chileno. Sus cuatro representantes de la categoría Open, Christian Merello, Ryan Cabezas, Chris Cabezas y Manuel Selman, perdieron en la primera ronda y mañana tendrán que vérselas en el repechaje.
Costa Rica:
Los ticos se lucieron en la categoría Open, de los cuatro competidores solamente uno cayó –Luis Vindas- y fue en la segunda ronda. Por su parte, Nino Medrano, Diego Naranjo y Gilberth Brown hicieron excelentes performances y están ahora escalados en la tercera ronda del evento principal.
Ecuador:
Los competidores de la categoría Open de Ecuador hicieron una excelente primera ronda; los cuatro de ellos, Sebastián Santos, Eusebio Rodríguez, Carlos Borbor y Javier Fey clasificaron a la segunda ronda. En la que no tuvieron suerte y perdieron. Descansarán mañana, esperando para competir en la segunda ronda del repechaje.
España:
No fue un buen día para el equipo español. De los cuatro competidores de la categoría Open, tres de ellos, Victor Ivan Pombo, Pelayo Suárez y Pipo Domínguez, cayeron en la primera ronda. Mientras que Felix Ortega Muñoz obtuvo un excelente primer lugar en su serie de primera ronda, pero cayó en la segunda ante el local CJ Hobgood, Sam Lamiroy de Inglaterra –segundo- y Mathew Kruger –tercero- de Sudáfrica.
Guatemala:
No fue un buen día para el equipo guatemalteco. Los cuatro competidores que surfearon hoy, Abner Rivera, Christian Mendez, Daniel López y Guilner Panazza, perdieron en su serie de primera ronda y mañana competirán en la primera ronda del repechaje.
México:
Tres de los cuatro representantes mexicanos de la categoría Open, consiguieron pasar la primera ronda, David Rutherford, Ángelo Lozano y Diego Cadena –haciendo un muy buen puntaje de 14.17 de 20 posibles-, pero cayeron al repechaje en su segunda actuación del día. Por su parte, Oscar Moncada, no pudo pasar su serie de la primera ronda y mañana se juega el todo o nada en su serie de primera ronda del repechaje.
Panamá:
Ningún panameño compitió hoy. El once veces Campeón Nacional, Gary Saavedra, que estaba escalado en la serie 18 no se presentó y por lo tanto mañana competirá en el repechaje.
Perú:
Los competidores peruanos Javier Swayne y Sebastián de Romaña hicieron una excelente presentación logrando pasar sin mayores problemas a la tercera ronda. Con Swayne obteniendo el primer lugar en las dos series en las que entró. Mientras tanto, el Tricampeón Sebastián Alarcón logró pasar su serie de primera ronda, pero cayó en la segunda. La gran sorpresa la dio el actual Vicecampeón Panamericano, Gabriel Aramburu quien perdió en la primera ronda y mañana deberá correr en el repechaje.
Puerto Rico:
Gabriel Escudero y William Sue-A-Quan consiguieron pasar sus series de la primera y segunda ronda sin mayores problemas, con el primero haciéndolo en primer lugar en ambas ocasiones, demostrando un excelente surfing, muy fluido y radical. Por su parte, Wilfredo Díaz tuvo una buena presentación en la primera ronda, pero cayó en la segunda. Mientras que Gustavo Betancourt perdió en la primera ronda y mañana se las verá en el repechaje.
República Dominicana:
No fue un buen día para República Dominicana, Brandon Sanford, Marcos Saint Hiliene, Víctor Rosario y Jesmarin Puente perdieron en la primera ronda y tendrán que vérselas mañana en el repechaje.
Venezuela:
El venezolano Francisco Bellorin logró un excelente primer lugar en sus respectivas series de la primera y segunda ronda, por lo que competirá mañana en la tercera. Mientras que Jean Carlo Schafer logró, con un excelente nivel de surf, pasar la primera ronda, pero no repitió su performance en la segunda, cayendo al repechaje. Por su parte, David Diaz y Pedro Rangel no pudieron encontrar las olas y cayeron en la primera ronda, ellos compiten mañana en la primera ronda del repechaje.
