South African Pride Soars with the Best Trick in Open Shortboard  & Win Over USA in Longboard
Brazil Posts First Perfect 10 of the Competition in Men’s Bodyboard

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 October, 2006 : - - Huntington Beach, Calif., –The heat was on in Day Six of the Lost Energy Drink ISA World Surfing Games and all competitorsaggressively surfed for a perfect score. Temperatures were in the mid 80’s with shoulder high waves with the occasional overhead set pulling in. The competition was fierce as the imminent elimination forced teams to really punctuate their performance . 

The morning was filled with paddle battles and a string of maneuvers in all divisions.  Dark horses, team Costa Rica swept through the Repercharge the heats with Luis Vindas and Gilbert Brown both taking first. 

 It was a battle to the finish in all eight of the Open Men’s Repercharge heats but the most fiery battle was between USA team’s CJ Hobgood, ranked seven in the ASP, and 2003 ISA World Junior Champion Jordy Smith of South Africa. Both competitors fought for first position and responded to each wave that was ridden by their opponent. Each wave they secured posted higher scores amidst the dual but. in the end, Smith clenched the win from Hobgood in the last minute.  Smith’s remarkable week of surfing culminated in the moment when he nailed a double-grab superman earning him 9.77.

In Heat 1, Matthew Moir sent three time Longboard World Champion Colin McPhillips into the Repercharge round when he earned both the highest single wave score and the highest combined score of 8.50 and a 16.60.  Also advancing forward is Benjamin Skinner of Great Britain and Bonga Perkins of Hawaii whose abilities to combine short board skills with classic longboard fluidity proved successful.

“The waves were the best I’ve ever seen in Huntington Beach. I had to mix noseriding with modern maneuvers. I’ve known Colin for some time now and I’ve surf with these guys for years. I finally got him!” said Moir of his win over McPhillips.

Michel Demont of Tahiti impressed judges and  clinched the first place slot with just three waves in his heat. On his final wave, Demont took off straight to the nose of the board for a stellar ride securing him with a 11.43 combined score.

The Bodyboarding division also showcased some thrilling rides, when Uri Valadoa of Brazil posted the first perfect 10 of the contest in the Men’s Bodyboard Qualifying 4 competition. Valadoa shot out of a left barrel and performed a huge ARS off the top of the lip leaving the judges in awe. His second wave score was a 9.5 when he once again squeezed out of closeout barrel for a incredible 19.5 combined.

 A very humble Valadoa said, “My teammates had to tell me which wave was the 10 because I didn’t even know. I was lucky today because I didn’t do anything wrong when the waves came to me. The set took a long time to come but I was lucky to get the best wave and did everything wave asked me to do.”

Amaury Lavernhe of France and Alvaro of Spain pushed through to the final Repercharge round after both capitalized on a barreling set that came through late in the afternoon.

The ladies also excelled in the Bodyboarding Qualifier 3 with Moe Watanabe one of the strongest riders from Japan posted an astonishing 18.33, the contest’s second highest score.

The Repercharge Round Four saw an equal amount of action with Rita Pires of Portugal, Kira Llewellyn of Australia and Marina Taylor of Spain in a neck-to-neck battle. In the last 20 seconds of the heat, an interference was called on Pires who was tied for first place with Llewellyn pushing her to third position.

 It was Kira Llewellyn of Australia who took first over Tara Parsons of the USA in the Repercharge with a combined score of 17.33. Llewellyn posted the highest single wave score of 9.00 when she performed a spin in the barrel pocket followed by a barrel roll, taking the first position slot from Parsons.
 
“I haven’t competed since end of august because I’ve been injured and barely surfed before the Games, but the conditions are nice and this south swell makes some great peaks” said Llewellyn.

As another sun filled day closed, competitors wound down in preparation for the semi finals tomorrow. Australia sits in first place, with Brazil in second and USA holding on strongly in third position.  Nearly half of the original 33 teams will compete tomorrow in hopes of making it to the coveted finals and the IOC trophy.  

Competition will move to a single Podium tomorrow beginning at 7:00 a.m with Mens Open, Womens Open, and Longboard.  Be sure to catch the Semifinal tag team beginning at 12:40 p.m.

LAS OLIMPIADAS DEL SURF ENTRAN EN SU RECTA FINAL
 
Australia, Brasil y Estados Unidos son firmes candidatos al título

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 October, 2006 : - - Luego de cinco arduos días de competencia, los Juegos Mundiales Lost Energy Drink de Surf  han llegado a su recta final, las más grandes potencias del surfing han demostrado lo mejor de sus talentos en una apasionante lucha por lograr el trofeo del Comité Olímpico Internacional y las medallas en cada categoría.  

De los casi 300 competidores que comenzaron el evento, restan 56. De los 33 países que se presentaron, restan los atletas de casi la mitad y ninguna de las naciones tiene a todos sus competidores con vida. Dos días faltan para que se definan los 20 medallistas en las cinco categorías y la nación que será reconocida como la poseedora del mejor nivel de surfing del mundo por medio del Trofeo del Comité Olímpico.  

 El sol brilló fuerte y el offshore mantuvo las olas de Huntington Beach con series de cuatro pies bien formadas durante todo el día. Los dos podios en donde se llevó a cabo la competencia vieron como se empujaban los límites del nivel de surfing serie tras serie. 

El sudafricano Jordy Smith, fue el que más arriesgó y el que más ganó, haciendo la sumatoria más alta de lo que va del campeonato en la cateogoría Open -17.77-, tras obtener un 9.77 en una ola en la que voló alto realizando un Superman, finalizando con un radical off the lip y un 8.00 en otra que rellenó de maniobras, finalizando con un excelente aéreo. Smith pasó por las tres series del repechajes que fueron disputadas hoy y ahora se encuentra escalado en la séptima ronda.  

Una vez fuera del agua, el sudafricano declaró: “Me estoy sintiendo muy bien, las olas en Huntington son un poco chicas y por eso todos estaban apurados por encontrarlas, realmente estoy muy contento por haber llegado tan lejos y espero que las cosas se den bien para lo que sigue. Crecí en una playa en donde las olas tienen muchas secciones para hacer aéreos, por lo tanto, creo que ése es mi asunto; estoy teniendo mucha suerte de que las condiciones estén parecidas a mi casa. Me gusta haber ganado por Sudáfrica, se siente muy bien ser parte del equipo y es muy bueno darle la mayor cantidad de puntos”.  

 Por su parte, el tico Gilberth Brown hizo historia para Costa Rica el día de hoy, también pasando todas sus series del repechaje, ubicándose ahora entre los 16 mejores surfistas del campeonato. Luego de su serie, mostrándose realmente muy feliz, Brown declaró: “Me siento muy bien, esto es una emoción que no tiene explicación, es mi tercer mundial y nunca había llegado tan lejos. Me siento más preparado y siento que Dios está conmigo porque en realidad yo solo entré y le dije que me pusiera las olas y yo hacía mi parte. En el entrenamiento no me sentía muy bien, pero una vez que entro a la serie todo me ha salido bien. Estoy muy feliz porque esto es una competencia de equipo y con esta victoria le estoy donando bastantes puntos a Costa Rica”.  

Entre otros resultados, vale destacar que el equipo local es el único que todavía tiene “vivos” a todos sus competidores de la categoría Open, dado que tanto Chris Ward como CJ Hobgood lograron pasar todas sus series del repechaje. Los dos surfistas se enfrentarán mañana en una serie difícil contra los sudafricanos Jordy Smith y Gavin Roberts.  

Brasil y Australia perdieron a su primer surfista en la categoría, con Wigolly Dantas y Blake Thonton, siendo eliminados en la quinta y sexta ronda del repechaje respectivamente.  

 Por otro lado, el único hispanoamericano además del propio Gilberth Brown que todavía está vivo en la Open es el mexicano Diego Cadena, quien con mucha fluidez abusó de los aéreos y consiguió pasar sus tres series de hoy.  

El puntaje más alto del evento entero fue realizado hoy por parte del bodyboarder brasilero Uri Valadão en la cuarta ronda del evento principal, sumando casi perfectos 19.5 puntos, tras combinar un 10 y 9.5 en sus dos mejores olas. Una vez fuera del agua, Uri comentó: “Las olas estaban demorando, pero tuve suerte de encontrar las mejores, gracias a Dios me vinieron a mí, espero continuar así y ganar el campeonato”. 

Además de Valadão, los tres surfistas que están a un paso de llegar a las medallas por medio del evento principal y que se enfrentarán mañana, son los portugueses Hugo Pinheiro y Manuel Centeno y el austaliano Andrew Lesler. Por el lado del repechaje, el francés Amaury Laverne y el español Álvaro Padrón esperan a los perdedores de esa serie para decidir quien completa la final.  

En Bodyboard Damas, la japonesa Moe Watanabe fue la autora del segundo score combinado más alto de todo el evento -18.33- para estar a un paso de la gran final. La nipona enfrentará a la puertorriqueña Natasha Sagardia, a la brasilera Neymara Carvalho y a la francesa Heloise Borroux para definir quién pasa directo a la final. Mientras que Kira Lewellyn de Australia y Marina Taylor de España, esperan en la final del repechaje a las perdedoras del heat recién nombrado.  

Se llevó a cabo el la tercera y cuarta ronda del repechaje de Damas, en la que la australiana Nichola Atherton tuvo un excelente desempeño, marcando la sumatoria más alta de su categoría el día de hoy, 15.66 de 20 posibles para garantizar su pasaje a la quinta ronda del repechaje. Por su parte, la peruana Kina Malpartida realizó el segundo mejor score combinado del día -14.43- y la brasilera Diana De Souza el tercero -14.27-. 

La acción continúa mañana a las 7:00 a.m. –hora local-. De ahora en más se utilizará solamente el podio principal, realizándose mañana todo lo que resta para definir a los grandes finalistas de las cinco categorías, además de las semifinales del Tag Team –prueba por equipos-.  

Hoy a la noche, los surfistas de todo el mundo se reunirán en la casa que hospeda a los mexicanos para una amigable fiesta. Huntington Beach es hasta el domingo la capital del surfing mundial, sede de las “Olimpiadas del Surf”

Resumen de la actuación de los países hispanohablantes  

Argentina:
El longboarder argentino Martín Pérez fue el primero en entrar al agua; corriendo muy bien su serie de la tercera ronda del evento principal, pero tuvo rivales fuertes y cayó al repechaje.  

Por su parte, Maximiliano Siri, tuvo una serie con pocas olas en la cuarta ronda del repechaje de Open y fue eliminado. 
Laura Pecoraro, la única representante argentina de Damas que restaba en la competencia fue desclasificada en la cuarta ronda del repechaje.

Chile:
Manuel Selman no pudo en su serie de cuarta ronda del repechaje de Open y así quedó fuera del campeonato. Por su parte, Sofía Borquez,  perdió en su batería de la tercera ronda del repechaje y fue desclasificada. Así, Chile ya no tiene más competidores con vida en el Mundial.  

Costa Rica:
Los ticos tuvieron un muy buen día hoy, con Gilberth Brown de Puerto Viejo consiguiendo ubicarse entre los mejores 16 surfistas del mundo, tras pasar sus series de la cuarta, quinta y sexta ronda con un excelente nivel de surfing.      

Por su parte, Luis Vindas y Nino Medrano consiguieron pasar su serie de la cuarta ronda del repechaje pero fueron eliminados más tarde en la quinta. Mientras que Diego Naranjo, que estaba escalado en la sexta ronda del repechaje no logró seguir adelante. Así, Costa Rica es el país de habla hispana que llevó más lejos a sus competidores de la Open.  

Naranjo, que también competía en Longboard, no logró pasar su serie de tercera ronda quedando así fuera del evento. 
Lisbeth Vindas también fue desclasificada en Damas, logrando llegar a la cuarta ronda del repechaje.

Ecuador:
Todos los competidores ecuatorianos han sido eliminados.  

España:
Los bodyboarders españoles, Álvaro Padrón y Marina Taylor tuvieron un buen día de competencia, estando Álvaro escalado en la final del repechaje y a un paso de la gran final. Mientras que Taylor también está a un paso de la gran final.  

Yeray Martínez no consiguió pasar su serie de la sexta ronda del repechaje y fue eliminado del campeonato. Lo mismo sucedió con Feliz Ortega Muñoz, último español en la categoría Open, que no pudo pasar de la cuarta ronda.    

Guatemala:
No quedan más competidores guatemaltecos en el evento.   

México:
Hoy Diego Cadena fue nuevamente la gran estrella mexicana del día, surfeando de forma radical y consistente en todas sus series, pasó por la cuarta, quinta y sexta ronda del repechaje y está ahora escalado entre los 16 mejores del mundo, buscando su lugar en la final.  

Por su parte, el longboarder José Manuel Cano logró pasar a la cuarta ronda del repechaje venciendo a Diego Naranjo de Costa Rica y Gerhard Weilheim de Venezuela.   

Panamá:
Gary Saavedra no pudo pasar su serie de cuarta ronda del repechaje y quedó fuera de competencia. Mientras que Samanta Alonso, se ubicó en tercer lugar en la tercera ronda y fue desclasificada del evento.  

Así, Panamá se quedó sin representantes en los Juegos Mundiales Lost Energy Drink de Surf.  

Perú:
No fue un buen día para el equipo peruano de surf. Ya en la primera serie del día, la estrella Javier Swayne cayó fuera de la competencia en la cuarta ronda del repechaje de Open. Mientras que Sebastián de Romaña logró pasar hasta la quinta del repechaje, donde fue eliminado, de esta forma, Romaña fue el mejor peruano en la principal categoría.  

Roberto Meza no consiguió pasar su serie de la tercera ronda del repechaje, de longboarder quedando fuera del campeonato. 

Kina Malpartida salvó la patria, haciendo una de las mejores series del día sumando 14.43 para pasar a la quinta ronda del campeonato. Mientras que Valeria Solé quedó en cuarto lugar en la tercera ronda del repechaje y fue desclasificada.  

Así, Kina Malpartida es la únca competidora peruana todavía en competencia.  

Puerto Rico:
William Sue-A-Quan comenzó bien el día logrando pasar en segundo lugar su serie de la cuarta ronda del repechaje de la Open, pero cayendo en la quinta.  Por su parte, Gabriel Escudero que estaba escalado en la sexta ronda del repechaje, no logró repetir sus excelentes anteriores actuaciones y también fue eliminado.   

En Damas, Idalis Alvarado no logró pasar su serie de tercera ronda del repechaje y fue desclasificada.  

Por su parte, Javier Baez logró pasar por la quinta y sexta ronda del repechaje de Bodybard, pero quedó en tercer lugar en la séptima y eliminado del evento. De todas formas, ha sido un muy destacable resultado el de Baez, logrando la sexta posición en el Mundial. Rafael Rivera llegó hasta la quinta ronda del repechaje, obteniendo la octava posición en el evento.  

Natasha Sagardia hizo una excelente actuación en la tercera ronda del evento principal, venciendo su serie y a un paso de las medallas.  

República Dominicana:
No quedan dominicanos en competencia.  

Venezuela:
Francisco Bellorin, único competidor venezolano restante en la categoría Open, no pudo pasar su serie de sexta ronda, ubicándose finalmente décimo quinto. Fue el mejor venezolano en dicha división y con sólo 16 años se obtuvo el décimo quinto puesto. 

Por su parte, Pedro Rosario hizo una excelente campaña en Bodyboard, logrando llegar hasta la séptima ronda del repechaje, ubicándose en sexto lugar en la general. Mientras que Alberto Colucci llegó hasta la quinta ronda del repechaje y fue eliminado, ubicándose en un buen noveno puesto en la general.  

Ruth Parra fue desclasificada en la tercera ronda del repechaje de Bodyboard Damas.  

En Damas, María Eugenia Rojas fue desclasificada en la tercera ronda del repechaje. 

Por lo tanto, no quedan más competidores venezolanos en los Juegos.

About International Surfing Association (ISA)
The International Surfing Association (ISA) is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the World Governing Authority for surfing, bodyboarding and surfriding.  It was originally founded as the International Surfing Federation in 1964 and has been running world championships since 1964, and the Junior World Championships since 1980.

ISA membership includes the surfing National Governing Bodies (NGBs) of over 50 countries on six continents.  Its headquarters are located in San Diego, California. It is presided by Fernando Aguerre, first elected in 1994 in Rio, and re-elected five times since.  The ISA's four Vice Presidents are from South Africa, Australia, Hawaii and the USA.
