Rosanne Hodge stars on day five of ISA World Surfing Games

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 October, 2006 : - - Rosanne Hodge was the toast of the South African surfing team competing in the 21st ISA World Surfing Games at Huntington Beach in California on Thursday when she top scored in the third round of the women’s division to advance to the last eight in the qualifying stream at the biennial event.

Unfortunately her teammate Tammy-Lee Smith could only manage fourth place in her heat in the same round but gets another chance in the repecharge rounds of the double elimination format.

And in the men’s bodyboarding division, SA’s Wesley Fisher produced a great performance, including an aerial reverse spin, to convincingly win his heat in repecharge round three and move into the next round along with teammate Sacha Specker, who placed second in his encounter.

However, as the standard of competition increased, both were eliminated later in the day when they placed third in their respective rep round four heats, placing equal 17th overall in the event and each contributing 800 valuable points to the accumulated team total.

SA’s Lyndall Pells, who took third place in her opening heat of the women’s bodyboarding, started her campaign to reach the final of the event through the repecharge rounds with a comfortable runner-up finish on Thursday and is through to round two.

But Hodge was the standout of the day, opening her account with a series of lip bashes in the head high waves that netted her 6.5 points from the judges, and then following that up with an outstanding 9.33 pointer that saw the 19 year-old East Londoner amass a heat total of 15.83, the highest in the division on the day.

She now faces WCT campaigners Jacqueline Silva (Brazil) and Jessi Miley-Dyer (Aus) along with veteran Patricia Rossi (Tahiti) in the fourth round when the women’s qualifying stream resumes. Hodge is potentially just two successful heats away from the final while teammate Smith faces five rounds of repecharge action to reach the same stage.

The men’s qualifying stream contenders were narrowed down to the last eight on Thursday and comprise three Brazilians, two Australians, two Americans and a Hawaiian. Brazilian Alejo Muniz was the standout, recording the day’s high total of 16.23 out of a possible 20 to advance along with WCT fixture Tom Whitaker (Aus) and consigning Blake Thornton (Aus) and Diego Naranjo (Costa Rica) to the cutthroat repecharges

Today’s action at the WSG at Huntington Beach sees live webcasts from podium one starting with open men’s repecharge round four featuring SA team members Gavin Roberts in heat one, captain Granville West in heat three and Jordy Smith in heat 6. Hopefully all will still be there for rounds five and six which follow, before the women’s repecharge rounds three and four where Tammy-Lee Smith returns to action.

First up on the second podium is qualifying round three of longboarding and SA’s Matthew Moir will be determined to repeat his feats of the opening day of competition on Sunday, when he was the standout performer of the day. That is followed by longboarding reps and men’s bodyboarding reps before Lyndall Pells continues her charge in the women’s bodyboarding repecharge round two, with rounds three through five also scheduled for today.

The results of the SA heats from yesterday plus an image of Rosanne Hodge in action appear at the bottom of this release
