Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 October 2006; Huntington Beach California, USA - – The 2006 Lost Energy ISA World Surfing Games concluded today with one of the closest final point scores in the Games history with team Australia winning the World Champion title with a total point score of 15,848. Brazil took the silver medal with a total of 15,123 followed by USA winning the bronze with 14,505 points and South Africa garnering the bronze with 13,346. The nine day event brought together 33 countries and over 300 surfers, some who came with full teams and others were proud to participate on behalf of their respective countries alone.

The morning of the Finals was met with fog hovering over the Huntington Beach break, but it quickly burned off to reveal semiglassy conditions with hest high to overhead waves. The beach was teeming with national spirit as all the countries reconvened waving their team flags and cheering for the final countries still in the race for the pursuit for gold.

The Final of Men’s Bodyboarding wrapped up a week of wild maneuvers and an impressive showing from all competing countries. Manuel Centeno and Hugo Pinheiro of Portugal, whose team standing came in at 7th were awarded the gold and silver medal, followed by Andrew Lester of Australia taking bronze, and Alvaro Pardon of Spain winning the copper. “This is so important for us to be on the same level as everyone else,” Centeno beamed. The entire Portugal team met the boarders on the beach and broke into the national anthem after the heat.

In the Women’s Open, Julia Christian former ISA Junior World Champion silver medalist and USA team member took the gold over Brazil’s Jacqueline Silva with just a .10 point difference. “I have competed against Jackie on the WCT before, and it is always very close and exciting because she is a great surfer. This was such a special event for me because typically I compete for myself on tour but here it’s for my country,” remarked Christian. The heat was filled with a dramatic wave by wave battle resulting in Christian narrowly grasping the gold. Rosanne Hodge of South Africa earned a bronze, and Courtney Conlogue, the youngest surfer in the competition won copper.

Womens Body boarding matched France’s Heloise Bourroux against Natasha Sagardia of Puerto Rico, Neymara Carvalho of Brazil and Kira Llewellyn of Australia. After posting two strong scores of 6.83 and 5.60 it was Llewellyn that earned the gold after advancing through the Repercharge rounds, Carvalho silver, Sagardia bronze and Bourroux copper.

There was quite an impressive resume behind all of the competitors in the Longboard final. Six‐time South African champion Matthew Moir defeated Harley Ingleby of Australia, Benjamin Skinner of UK and Bonga Perkins of Hawaii when he surfed a flawless heat hanging ten, cross stepping the board and kicking in big bottoms for the gold medal. “This is my first time on the team and I am so stoked. I was stuck in the start of the heat but I really focused for this event, mixing traditional noseriding with modern day floaters and air and pushed through. I am just so honored to be here and win,” said an elated Moir. Benjamin Skinner of Great Britain impressed judges all week and was awarded the silver medal, Harley Ingleby bronze, and Bonga Perkins copper.

In the climatic end of the Men’s Open Final it was Jordy Smith of Cape Town, South Africa that punctuated his week of tremendous surfing; pulling wild aerials and superman maneuvers to earn the gold medal. Smith, 2003 Junior World Champion was deemed a “force of nature” for his exceptional surfing amidst the event. Not since 1992 has a surfer that has gone to Repercharge come through the heats to be crowned the gold medal Champion. This opportunity is owed to the unique two round system of this event, which allows surfers to redeem themselves at several levels of the contest. The medalists were followed by Australia’s Luke Stedman winning the silver medal, Pat O’Connell of USA winning bronze and Armando Daltro of Brazil earning copper. “This means the world to me. It was tough to make it through the whole contest, but I did what I had to do to get to the final and win it. I am really happy,” said a smiling Smith.

The day also included the final for the ISA Nations Cup tag team event, a unique ISA tradition where the top eight countries compete for first through fourth place medals. Although the tag team has no bearing on the championships results, it is a fun aside to the contest and saw Australia taking gold, Brazil silver, South Africa bronze and Costa Rica copper.

The Awards Ceremony was an emotional, pride filled ending to a great week of surfing. Fernando Aguerre, President of the ISA read a poem from a friend in England which reflected on the week and brought a poignant summation to the Games. Mike Gerard, Executive Director of Surfing America greeted the crowd, “what a beautiful event it was and how honored we are to welcome all of the nations here to share these waves at beautiful Surf City USA.” Special medals were given to the entire judging staff, as well as the newly elected Vice Presidents of the ISA.

Additionally Pirata, a figure of inspiration for all surfers was presented an award for his great contributions to the sport and his tireless commitment despite his disability. Aguerre closed the highly lauded event by saying, “remember in life the only failure is when you give up on your dreams, everything else is a victory. Please remember don’t give up on surfing.” The ISA is thrilled to host the 2008 ISA World Surfing Games in Portugal.

Australia vence los Juegos Mundiales Lost Energy Drink de Surf
Brasil, Estados Unidos y Sudáfrica le siguen en el ranking final por naciones.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 October 2006; Huntington Beach California, USA - – El equipo australiano de surf fue el incuestionable vencedor de los Juegos Mundiales Lost Energy Drink de Surf, que finalizaron hoy en Huntington Beach, California, en olas de hasta seis en las series y buena formación.

Tras realizar la mejor combinación de resultados en las cinco categorías que puntúan para el ranking final por equipos, Australia superó a las potencias del surfing que son Brasil y Estados Unidos. Por su parte, Sudáfrica fue un gran destaque, siendo el único país que ganó dos medallas de oro individuales –Open y Longboard-.

Se corrieron quince series; las finales del evento principal, las del repechaje y las grandes finales de todas las categorías. Además de Sudáfrica, Estados Unidos, Portugal y Australia lograron medalla de oro en las distintas categorías del campeonato.

El sudafricano de 17 años, Jordy Smith, se convirtió en el Campeón Mundial Open tras realizar una devastadora actuación en todas las series que entró desde que cayó al repechaje en la segunda ronda del evento principal, hasta la final del campeonato. Tras haber sido Campeón Mundial Junior en el 2003, consolidó su estatus con su victoria de hoy; ganándole a varios de los mejores talentos del WCT y mostrando un surfing que promete; fluido, versátil, poderoso e innovador.

La final de Open fue un poco lenta, pero tuvo sus momentos brillantes. Comenzó con el australiano Luke Stedman tomando la punta, marcando 7.33 luego de hacer un potente off the lip que fue seguido de un floater en una ola de la serie. Smith le respondió con dos aéreos y un off the lip en la misma ola, que fue premiada con un 6.93. Mientras que Pat O´Connell y Armando Daltro se mantuvieron durante toda la serie fuera de la disputa.

La final fue decidida en dos momentos: Cuando Smith literalmente destruyó una izquierda que abrió perfecta, realizando cuatro off the lips y un radical snap y obteniendo 8.5, para pasar por encima de Stedman que a esa altura había agregado 5.6 a su sumatoria. Y cuando Stedman le hizo una clara interferencia a Smith, quedando así sin posibilidades de vencer. El resto de los competidores precisando una combinación de dos olas.

Una vez fuera del agua, el sudafricano declaró: “La final fue difícil, pero tengo que agradecerle a Stedman, ya que por meterse en mi ola sumó menos puntos a su combinación. Estoy muy contento, fue difícil hacer casi todo el campeonato por el repechaje, por suerte conseguí lo necesario para llegar a la final y ganarla. Esto es el mundo para mí, gané este título como Junior y ahora lo estoy respaldando con esta victoria; así que estoy realmente muy feliz. Ahora espero lograr entrar al WCT el año que viene”.

En Damas, Julia Christian de Estados Unidos, medalla plata en los pasados Juegos, venció una peleada final contra Jacqueline Silva de Brasil –segunda-, Rossane Hodges de Sudáfrica –tercera- y a la local de solamente 14 años, Courtney Conlogue –cuarta-.

Silva comenzó fuerte marcando ocho puntos en una izquierda que rellenó de maniobras, pero Christian respondió con una combinación diez céntimos mayor. Sumando 6.33 y 7.10 en una derecha e izquierda, respectivamente, en las que hizo buenas maniobras. A la brasilera le faltó mejorar su segunda ola, en la que sumó 4.67.

Una vez fuera del agua, Christian comentó: “Fue una serie difícil, al final me puse a la defensiva para evitar que Jacqueline tome olas, sé que es una excelente surfista, ella precisaba un cinco con algo, un puntaje que puede conseguir fácilmente, por eso la marqué. Al final consiguió una pero no fue suficiente. Estoy muy contenta, había llamado a Peter Towned –Manager del equipo de Estados Unidos- cuando supe que se iba a hacer el evento y le dije que quería estar en el equipo, él me dijo que tenía mi lugar garantizado, por suerte las cosas salieron bien”.

La final de Bodyboard Masculino fue dominada por Portugal, con sus dos representantes, Manuel Centeno y Hugo Pinheiro, llegando a la misma por medio del evento principal y obteniendo luego el oro y la plata respectivamente tras una excelente demostración de bodyboarding. Los amigos portugueses levantaron los aplausos de la playa entera cuando en una excelente muestra de amistad y patriotismo dieron fin a la serie con un fuerte abrazo y comenzaron a entonar el Himno Nacional Portugués.

Una vez fuera del agua, Centeno declaró: “Me estoy sintiendo tal como mi amigo, pues si él ganara, sería lo mismo para mí. En este momento no estoy pensando en que gané sino en mi equipo, que fue muy fuerte; nunca habría conseguido nada si no fuera por mis amigos, en especial Hugo. La verdad que estoy muy feliz”.

El bronce fue para el australiano Andrew Lester y el cobre fue para el español Álvaro Padrón.

El seis veces Campeón Nacional Sudafricano de Longboard, Mathew Moir confirmó su calidad de favorito, luego de vencer todas las series del campeonato en las que entró, combinando lo mejor de la vieja y la nueva escuela de la modalidad, llegó a la final y se llevó el oro, en el marco de una buena batalla que el inglés Benjamin Skinner le dio, logrando así la plata.

Moir garantizó su victoria tras obtener 8.67 en una ola en la que hizo un elegante hang ten, continuó con un poderoso off the lip, hizo un pequeño tubo mientras que colgaba los cinco –hang five- y finalizó con un off the lip. Por su parte, el australiano Harley Ingleby se llevó el bronce y el hawaiano Bonga Perkins el cobre.

La única medalla de oro –de las categorías que puntúan para el ranking final por selecciones- que el equipo ganador recibió, fue la de Bodyboard Femenino. La representante Kira Lewellyn brilló en su serie, escogiendo las mejores olas y realizando las más radicales maniobras, sumando 12.34 para dejar en segundo a Neymara Carvalho de Brasil, en tercero a la puertorriqueña Natasha Sagardia y en cuarto a la francesa Heloise Bourroux.

En la Copa de Naciones de la ISA, Australia también se llevó el oro, haciendo una buena distribución del tiempo, los cinco competidores del equipo sumaron los puntos suficientes para dejar a Brasil con la plata, a Sudáfrica con el bronce y a Costa Rica con el cobre. Así, por primera vez en la historia, Costa Rica obtuvo una medalla de los Juegos Mundiales de Surf.

Una vez terminado el campeonato, se llevó a cabo una emocionante entrega de premios y de clausura del evento. Se cantaron los himnos de los países ganadores, se entregaron las medallas y se hicieron los respectivos presentes de nación a nación, materializando el propio cometido de la ISA para el presente campeonato: “Que los países del mundo puedan convivir en paz, amistad y camaradería, unidos por el surfing”.

Mike Gerard, Director Ejecutivo de Surfing America entregó la arena de Huntington Beach a João Guillermo, Presidente de la Federación de Surfing de Portugal, país que realizará los siguientes Juegos Mundiales de Surf, Junior y Abiertos, en el 2007 y 2008 respectivamente.

Fernando Aguerre, Presidente de la ISA cerró el campeonato diciendo: “En la vida, el único fracaso es cuando uno abandona sus sueños, el resto es una victoria. Por favor recuerden: ¡no abandonen al surfing!”.

Los Juegos Mundiales Lost Energy Drink de Surf, encarnaron por un año más a las “Olimpiadas del Surf”, alrededor de 300 atletas de 33 países, compitieron en cinco categorías, por el honor de representar a sus países. Fueron nueve días apasionantes en los que el mejor surfing del mundo fue puesto a prueba, con el esencial espíritu de camaradería y paz entre los pueblos del mundo, unidos por el amor al surfing.

Resumen de la actuación de los países hispanohablantes

Argentina:
La Selección Argentina de Surf participó con el equipo incompleto y se ubicó en la 24ª posición.
 
Chile:
La Selección Chilena de Surf participó con equipo incompleto y se ubicó en la 22ª posición.

Costa Rica:
Hizo una excelente presentación en los Juegos Mundiales Lost Energy Drink de Surf, ganándose el respeto de todos los presentes, obteniendo la mejor posición de su historia –octavo lugar- y logrando su primera medalla, tras ubicarse cuartos en la Copa de Naciones de la ISA.

Ecuador:
Se presentó con equipo completo y se ubicó en la 18ª posición.

España:
Se presentó con equipo completo, se ubicó en la 16ª posición y obtuvo la medalla de cobre en la categoría Bodyboard Masculino, tras una excelente presentación de Álvaro Padrón.

Guatemala:
Se presentó con equipo incompleto y se ubicó en la 26ª posición.

México:
Se presentó con equipo completo y se ubicó en la 15ª posición.

Panamá:
Se presentó con equipo incompleto y se ubicó en la 27ª posición. 

Perú: Se presentó con equipo completo y se ubicó en 14ª posición.

Puerto Rico:
Se presentó con equipo completo, se ubicó 11º y se llevó la medalla de bronce en Bodyboard Femenino, luego de la excelente performance demostrada por su representante, Natasha Sagardia.

República Dominicana:
La Selección Dominicana de Surf se presentó con el equipo incompleto y se ubicó en la 31ª posición.

Venezuela:
Asistió con equipo completo y se ubicó en la 15ª posición.

The International Surfing Association (ISA) is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the World Governing Authority for surfing, bodyboarding and surfriding.  It was originally founded as the International Surfing Federation in 1964 and has been running world championships since 1964, and the Junior World Championships since 1980.
