Macleod Crowned South Coast Surf Carnival Longboard Champion
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 October, 2006 : - - For the second consecutive year an out of town surfer walked away with the South Coast Surf Carnival longboarding title when East London’s Dylan Macleod triumphed at Scottburgh beach on Sunday, October 29, 2006. The festival which is into its fourth year is presented by Jeep and The Mercury and attracted thousands of beachgoers to the mid-south coast of KZN.
The surf conditions cleaned up considerably on Sunday in time for the finals. The strong wind dropped off providing glassy contestable one-metre waves.
“Wow, what a fantastic climax to a brilliant event. Scottburgh was packed today with holidaymakers and locals who came down to enjoy the festivities and I would like to thank the public for their support and the carnival crew looks forward to seeing them all again in 2007,” said Paul Godwin of Nerve events who organised the South Coast Surf Carnival.
2006 SA Longboard Champion and Jeep team rider Dylan Macleod (East London) showed his class in the 30-minute decider with a 7.5-point ride to snatch victory away from former KZN Longboarding Champion Brandon Ribbink (Berea). Hot on his heels was Craig Daniels (Bluff) in third with Grant Gilmore (Durban) in fourth. The latter two surfers also took part in the over 40 category and caused some major upsets en route to the open division final ousting stars like the defending champion Michael Grendon (Cape Town).
The ladies final saw the reigning SA Champion Lisa Smith (Sherwood) blitz her opposition with an outstanding 8.5-point ride on her second wave. Smith finished with almost double the points of second placed Tasha Mentasti (Durban North) who is well known for her shortboard surfing. Zanie Cawood (Durban) placed third ahead of perennial favourite Nikki Trickett (Berea).
The junior final saw Brandon Jackson (Durban North) pick up where he left off last year posting another convincing win over Ross Colepepper (Durban).
In the over 40 division Colin Whitmore (Durban) combined powerful manoeuvres with traditional longboard surfing and impressed the judges. Craig Daniels (Bluff) was not far behind in second place ahead of Mike Buhn (Durban) with Brendan Callaghan (Morningside) taking fourth.
The over 50 final proved to be a close affair with the lead changing hands several times between Mike Larmont (Durban North) and Attie van de Pas (Durban North). In the dying minutes of the heat Larmont’s patience game paid off handsomely when he picked up an 8-point ride to seal victory. Mike Colepepper (Durban) and Dave Hadlow (Durban) finished third and fourth respectively.
The kiteboarders were in their element on Saturday with a howling north-easterly wind providing idyllic conditions for them to showcase their sport at its best.
Defending event champion Mark Lambert (Amanzimtoti) made his 2006 title aspirations clear with some big moves to win the king of the air event ahead of relative newcomer Julian Taylor (Morningside).
Linda Potts (Durban) took the ladies title with Jason Wright (Umhlanga) the ultimate open winner. In the masters event Brett Pengelly (Durban) triumphed with Manuel Santos (Durban) scooping top honours in the novice competition.
The Isolezwe Point Surf Academy Development Clinics proved to be a major hit with nearly 50 youngsters attending the free surfing lessons held by top coaches and qualified lifeguards.
The South Coast Surf Carnival presented by Jeep and The Mercury has grown to include free development surfing clinics and the family orientated sport of kiteflying.
