Kahuna Surf Series Event # 2
Melkbosstrand, South Africa 4 - 5 November 2006
Wilson and Scott star in second Kahuna Surf Series event at Melkbosstrand
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 November, 2006 : - - Daniel Wilson (Tokai) and Sabrina Scott (Glencairn) produced outstanding performances at the second event in the Kahuna Surf Series on the weekend, each winning one division and reaching the final of another while racking up the highest scores of the Boys and Girls divisions respectively in good one metre surf at Melkbosstrand.
Wilson, last year’s U12 boys KSS champion, made up for missing the first event of 2006 at Muizenberg by capturing the U14 boys crown and placing fourth in the U16’s at Melkbos, as well as earning the Best Kustomised Manoeuvre award with a great display of high performance surfing.
In similar fashion, Scott went unbeaten throughout the qualifying rounds in both divisions at the Melkbos event and added the U16 girls crown to her maiden event victory in the U14 division at Muizenberg last month. The 13 year-old also placed third in the U14 final and claimed the Best Kustomised Manoeuvre award for girls for what the judges called a ‘sick backhand carve’ on the first day.
Jordan Maree (Tokai) was the only competitor to successfully defend his title when he clinched a second straight victory in the U10 division. The eight year-old showed outstanding form to easily outscore his opponents.
The U14 girls final was an extremely closely contested affair that saw Anna Notten defeat fellow St James resident Alex Morris in a count back after they finished level on two rides, with Notten getting the decision on the strength of her better top scoring ride.
Ollie Morris (St James) turned the tables on his peers in the U12 boys division, wrapping up the win with an excellent ride featuring radical manoeuvres that netted him an average of 8.5 points out of a possible 10 from the judges.
And Justin Torode just came out on top in the U16 boys in a ding-dong battle with fellow Melkbos local Tiaan Vogel that saw half a point separate the first two. It was Vogel’s second runner-up spot and he holds top spot in the series ratings in this division heading into the third and final KSS event in Kommetjie in December.
An informal Father and Son / Daughter heat produced plenty of fun with the Kommetjie duo of Paul and Jonah Paarman emerging victorious while an impromptu freestyle skateboard contest was also staged with plenty of sponsor’s products being distributed.
Maree, with a full house of 2 000 points, holds a comfortable lead in the U10 ratings; Benjamin de Castro (Muizenberg) has a pair of runner-up finishes to head the U12 boys standings; Leon du Preez (Melkbos) is ranked first in the U14 boys with a first and third while Anna Notten and Sabrina Scott are level pegging at the top of the U14 girls and Kirsten Kingma (Hout Bay) holds a slender 10 point lead in the U16 girls.
Sanctioned by WP Surfing, the Kahuna Surf Series is designed to attract novice surfers to contest surfing and excludes any surfer who has qualified for the final of a national contest. The series is generously supported by many of the country’s major surf and youth brands such as Reef Wetsuits, Kustom footwear, Puma sports, Island Style accessories, Cobian sandals, Atlantic Surf, Zigzag surfing magazine and Lifestyle Surf shop.
The series champions after three events also receive commemorative medals, custom Reef Wetsuits, Freestyle watches and a three-day intensive surf camp under the supervision of Dene Botha, the country’s highest qualified surf coach, along with specialty awards of Von Zipper eyewear.
The third and final event in the Kahuna Surf Series is scheduled for Kommetjie on December 9 & 10 where the 2006 series champions will be crowned.
