Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 November, 2006 : - - Irvine, CA – Op (Ocean Pacific), the original icon in American surfing, returns to Hawaii this November as title sponsor of the Op Pro Hawaii, the first jewel in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing®. In conjunction with their world class men’s and women’s surfing competition, Op will also host the Op Pro North Shore Makahiki Festival - a weekend festival for the local community that will include internationally recognized bands, feature films, an interactive keiki area, food booths and a Vendor Village comprised of local artists and businesses.

The Op Pro Makahiki Festival will be the weekend of Nov. 11 and 12, at Haleiwa Beach Park, on the northern side of the boat harbor, between the hours of 12-noon and 10p.m. The Op Pro Hawaii holding period is Nov. 12 to Nov. 22, 2006 at Haleiwa Ali’i Beach Park on Oahu’s famous North Shore. "We were excited to take the Op Pro back to Haleiwa last year and now we’re super stoked to be able to step it up another notch adding the culture and excitement of the North Shore with the Makahiki Festival," said Gary Siskar, Op’s Senior Director of Marketing.

"It was our goal from the beginning to build this first leg of the Vans Triple Crown Series into a lifestyle event that incorporates local business, music, film and art, to share our surfing spirit with the local community. The North Shore family has been highly supportive of us since we were first associated with the Triple Crown back in 1993.”

The Op Pro Hawaii North Shore Makahiki Festival will include performances by Elan, Ray Barbee, Mt. Egypt, and local musicians. It will also feature the Hawaiian premiere of the Pipeline Masters movie, with other films to show including Ultimate Sessions, Bike Trip, and a soon-to-be-released feature film.

"Op is certainly putting their brand on the Haleiwa surf scene with sponsorship of the Op Pro Hawaii and now the community-based Makahiki Festival," said Randy Rarick, Executive Director for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. "We’re really happy with their involvement and feel it is the perfect kick-off to the Triple Crown Series."

The Makahiki Festival is ON, FRI, Nov 10, Sat and Sun

The ancient Makahiki festival began in November and lasted until February. Hawaii only has two seasons. Wet “Ho’oilo” and dry “Kau”. The Makahiki was a celebration in honor of the god “Lono”, who made things to grow. The makahiki was a time for celebration and games. Annual taxes ‘auhau and offerings “Ho’okupu” were collected by the Chief of the land. When the taxes were all collected, the games began.

Games of strength like Mokomoko(boxing)He’enalu (Surfing) Ulu Maika (lawn bowling) Umauma (wrestling) Heihei-Kukini (running) and Hula were all part of the Makahiki festival. To work was Kapu (forbidden). The Makahiki was a time to strengthen the body. No other culture in the world set aside four months of no work for its people. The Makahiki was truly a time of celebration.
