Koastal Kaos Event #2
Presented by No Fear

Crystal Pier, San Diego CA
12 November 2006

Ryan Carlson wins stop #2 in No Fear Koastal Kaos Series Air Show

Event #2: Dogfight over San Diego: The Battle of Crystal Pier

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 November, 2006 : - - Big waves, big-name surfers and big, bold moves all highlighted the second stop of the No Fear Energy Airshow. Everyone looking down from Crystal Pier or out from the beach walked away stunned at just how much surfing has progressed over the last five years, once thought "unpullable" wave and aerial tactics now becoming the standard benchmark.

Then there was the Airshow competition itself. So focused on their moves and tricks, many surfers lost track of just where they were, actually hitting the wood of the pier itself! In fact Justin Mcbride (who would ultimately place fourth in the finals), found himself at odds with Crystal Pier, ramming the thing three different times. Ever-steady Michel Flores of Brazil finished third overall.

Round two of the Air Show tour came down to a two man dogfight between Josh Buran and Ryan Carlson. Buran drew first blood in the battle over the skies of San Diego racing up the face of a 4 foot wave, launching off its lip, and flying nearly three foot out of the water. Back and forth it went, high scores flying off the judge's scoring sheets. In fact, at one point, Ryan nearly outshined Buran's sky shot, almost pulling off a backflip.

When all was said and done, it was all over but the screaming and shouting, with Carlson snatching the $1,200 purse away from the gallant, highly skilled Buran. The No Fear Air Show will take off New Year’s Day weekend from the South jetty of Oceanside. No stranger to military aircraft, Oceanside should be one hell of an Airshow.

Thanks to all our sponsors: No Fear, Ocean Minded, Futures Fins, Bubble Gum, Gravity Skateboards, Spy, Destination, Surfing Magazine and Wetsand.com See you all on December 31st at Oceanside Harbor!
