No Competition for O'Neill World Cup Monday 12/4/06 - Looks Good for Tuesday 12/5/06
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 December, 2006 : - - Sunset Beach, HAWAII - - There will be no competition for the men's O'Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach today, however organizers are expecting a start first thing tomorrow, Tuesday, at 8am, when the round of 32 will resume.
Just one full day of competition remains for this event, the second of three stops on the men's Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, but schedule demands and Mother Nature's delivery of swell (both huge and small) have found difficulty in arriving at the same place at the same time.
Today's call remained on standby until 11am. Armed with data from oceanic buoy #51001, located 170 nautical miles NW of Kauai (the island north of Oahu), a spike in readings very early this-morning clearly showed the arrival of a new swell some time during the mid-part of today. However, having not filled in sufficiently by 11am, the event was called off for the day.
At this time, the swell at Sunset Beach is on the rise, forecast to peak late tonight and then gradually drop through tomorrow. Wednesday, December 6, is the final day of the holding period, but if forecast to see a huge rise in swell that is expected to wash out Sunset Beach by early afternoon, if not before.
For these reasons, organizers are set on running AT LEAST a half day tomorrow, starting at 8am. Waves withstanding, tomorrow could turn into a full day of competition that would crown the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing mid-afternoon. If necessary, the final heats could be held over to Wednesday morning, when they would run first thing before the onslaught of unrideable swell.

About O'Neill: The World’s Original Surf Brand O’Neill was founded in the bone-chilling waves of Northern California when a young man named Jack O’Neill and his unstoppable passion for surfing found a way to beat Mother Nature at her own game. Back in 1952 Jack pioneered the first neoprene wetsuit and opened the doors (garage door) to his first Santa Cruz surf shop.
While many things have changed since these humble beginnings, Jack’s initial vision to produce functional and innovative board riding continues to lie at the core of everything we do. From the first ever neoprene wetsuit back in 1952, to the world’s first stitchless Boardshorts, and now a range of groundbreaking wearable electronics, innovation continues to be the fuel that powers O’Neill onwards.
