    Surfing World Records

2006 was a record year for breaking World Records in the Surfing World

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 December, 2006 : - - This year has proven to be a record breaker many times over. The Guinness World Record for the number of Surfers on One Wave, was broken a whopping 4 times. The Guinnes World Record for the longest a wave was ridden was smashed in Brazil.

In the contest world Kelly Slater claimed his 8th ASP World Title at Mundaka in Spain, and Layne Beachley cliamed her 7th World title in Maui. Sofia Mulanovich entered the record books by winning the Van Triple Crown Womens Series.

Below is a brief recap of the record breaking events.

Most surfers standing on one wave now set at 73

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 September, 2006 : - - Thanks to the phenomenal support of the surfing community of the Cape Peninsula, the Guinness World Record for the 'Most surfers standing on one wave' was easily surpassed at Muizenberg Corner on Sunday 17 September 2006 when 73 intrepid wave-riders caught and then rode a single wave for longer than five seconds.

The record is unofficial at present as video evidence submitted to the GWR organisation in London is still to be officially ratified, but with 349 surfers having paddled out to make the attempt and three of the other five waves ridden producing 69, 68 and 64 surfers standing for five seconds, previous records are about to be consigned to history.

"The response to the record breaking attempt was overwhelming", commented an elated Dene Botha, owner of the Kahuna Surfing Academy, who registered the record attempt and organised the Muizenberg event, adding "We were hoping for about 200 surfers but well over 300 made the effort and it's thanks to them, and all the generous sponsors, particularly those who funded the participation and transport costs for more than 50 surfers from previously disadvantaged communities, that has brought this world record to Cape Town."

Manly surfers claim record: 46 on one wave

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 31 May, 2006 : - - Enterprising surfers at Manly Beach decided to claim their world mark. The group from the Manly surf school brought a surfing world record back to our shores after 46 people successfully rode the same wave. The school had set a record of 38 in 2000, but it was lifted to 40 in San Diego and then 43 in Ireland.

So Matt Grainger, director of the surf school, decided to re-claim the mark and it was achieved on the tenth attempt with a mixture of high school students, veterans and five surfing novices. The feat was recorded and has been sent to the Guinness World Records for verification. "We had the record six years ago, 38 persons at Manly beach," Grainger said. "One of my mates told me it got beaten in San Diego, then recently again in Ireland.

Seventh World Ttile for Layne Beachley at Billabong Pro Maui

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 December, 2006 : - - HONOLUA BAY, Hawaii  Seventeen-year ASP Women’s World Tour veteran Layne Beachley has won an unprecedented 7th ASP Women’s World Tour Title in Honolua Bay, Maui today. It has been two years since Beachley last secured a world title.

"It's surreal, absolutely surreal,” Beachley said. “It's been such a journey this year and to not have to actually fight for it, to have it almost handed to me, it's one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had. This is probably one of the most rewarding and satisfying world titles I've ever won.”

This is the fifth world crown the 34-year-old has clinched in Maui. She clinched her first title in 1998 in France, and her second, in 1999, at Sunset Beach. Each of her five since have been won at Honolua Bay.

“This is my fifth world title in Maui and my seventh title overall,” Beachley said. “Maui obviously has a very special place in my heart; it’s such an amazing amphitheater. It’s been such a beautiful day and such a surreal experience – I don’t know how to explain it.”

Beachley was the world’s No. 1 female surfer for six successive years – from 1998 to 2003 – and holds the record for the most consecutive surfing world championships, male or female. Her ASP Women’s World Title stranglehold was interrupted by Sofia Mulanovich (PER) in 2004 and Georgeson in 2005.

Only Kelly Slater (USA) has won more ASP World Titles than Beachley, having won his eighth ASP crown this year. Slater’s five consecutive titles from 1994-1998 are the closest anyone has come to nearing Beachley’s six-year pro-surfing monopoly.

Roxy surfer Sofia Mulanovich enters record books again

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 December, 2006 : - - Honolulu, HAWAII - - Sofia Mulanovich (PERU) has now notched up every major accolade in the sport, culminating yesterday in her win of the esteemed Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Sofia, just 23 years of age, officially clinched the Triple Crown title on Maui to receive a $10,000 bonus purse that is the equivalent of a major championship event win.

On the 10th anniversary of the women's Triple Crown, which began in 1997, Mulanovich emerged from the three-event Series held on the Hawaiian islands of Oahu and Maui as the most consistent performer across the three events: the Op Pro at Haleiwa, Oahu, which she won; the Roxy Pro Hawaii at Sunset Beach, where she placed 9th; and the final stop, the Billabong Pro at Honolua Bay, Maui, which resulted in a fifth placing.

Outside of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) world title, the Vans Triple Crown title is considered to be the most prestigious title to win on tour. Not only is the Series staged at three of the surfing world's most famous and challenging venues, but the deep history and tradition of these events, and ultimately surfing's Hawaiian roots, make them the most respected tournaments on tour.

"Along with the world title, the Triple Crown is right up there and winning it is amazing," said Sofia. "Just to win in Hawaii is incredible - it's such a prestigious place for surfers.
