WQS Surfer Leads Boardriding Club To Victory At Malibu Teams Challenge
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 January, 2007 : - - Gold Coast surfing sensation Corey Ziems (Currumbin) has led Kirra Surfriders to victory in event one of the ‘07 Queensland Club Surfing Series (QCSS), the Malibu Teams Challenge, held at Duranbah Beach today.
Ziems, 23, enjoyed a brief break home from his World Qualifying Series (WQS) duties to lead his star troops: Asher Pacey, Clancy Dawson, Dave Davidson and Matt Hurworth to the title with 63.85 points, ahead of boardriding heavyweights Snapper Rocks (51.75).
Buoyed by a recent sponsorship deal with an international surf wear company, Ziems took to D’bah’s 2-ft peaks with consummate ease to set up a well deserved victory for his long-time club. In a truly savvy performance, the talented natural footer tested the status quo, pushing performance limits to an all-time high. Ziems’ two wave score (8 & 7.25) was amongst today’s highest and proved the difference in the tightly contested final.
Despite a valiant effort, Noosa and Burleigh Boardriders finished third (44.9) and fourth (44.2) respectively. With a stacked field of Queensland and Australia’s premier boardriding clubs competing, the $10,000 club tournament laid the foundation for a hotly fought ’07 series.
The innovative team event will culminate with an action-packed presentation after-party at the Burleigh Beach Club. The after-party doubles as the Surfing Queensland Awards Night and New Year Party. The sport’s night of nights will crown state champions. Doors open at 7pm sharp!
The next stop on the ’06 QCSS is the Kirra Teams Challenge starting on February 23rd, 2007. Prize money breakdown: 1st $5,000 2nd $2,000 3rd 1,000 4th $700, Eq 5th $400, Eq 7th $250.
The Malibu Teams Challenge is proudly supported by Tooheys Extra Dry, Coca-Cola, Aqua Sun and Surfing Queensland.
