Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 January, 2007 : - - The South African team is the new ISA Masters World Champion nation at the Porta del Sol ISA World Masters Surfing Championships, which finished today in excellent barrelling 10 to 15 feet faces, breaking at the beautiful Marías Beach, Rincón.

Juan Ashton from Puerto Rico, along with Magoo de la Rosa from Peru and Chris Knutsen from South Africa obtained gold medals in the Masters, Grand Masters and Kahunas divisions respectively.

As it was predicted, the powerful northwest swell arrived at Rincon’s coast with no mercy, making the last stages of the event to be carried out in big conditions, with the athletes choosing larger boards in order to get the best out of the waves.

The last two rounds of the repercharge and the event finals took place. Puerto Rico that was leading the nation’s ranking and had all its team in the competition, lost four athletes on the way to the final. But it still hung on to the battle, head-to-head against South Africa until the last heat of the day, which gave the Africans a favourable result.

The first final to be disputed was the Masters’.  Juan Ashton was the leader of the heat from the beginning to the end. He chose his waves correctly and attacked them with good off the lips and cutbacks, to make 9.25 and 7.25 points in his best two. With that score, he beat Tahitian Heifara Tahutini –second-, Brazilian Wagner Pupo –third- and South African John McCarthy –fourth-.

Once he was out of the water, a happy Ashton declared: “It feels really great, to win in Puerto Rico and with big waves, I’m very happy. Today I tried to focus on two things: finding the waves and making vertical moves. In the heat that had got me into the repercharge round I panicked and surfed bad waves. Today I told myself to do otherwise and that gave me this result. Now I’m going to enjoy this title a lot in my country.”

On the other hand, in the Grand Masters division, the fight for the heat was tough and the results weren’t defined till the last 90 seconds of the heat. The final was lead by local Alberto Licha at first, but then Tahitian Heinere Paez placed himself in the first place combining 14.75 in his best two waves. Whereas Peruvian Magoo de la Rosa, who had remained half of the heat without taking any wave, started scoring a 7.10 after he completed an excellent floater in a wave with good size. After this he needed a 7.66 and when less than a minute and a half remained, De la Rosa found a right that he filled with good backside moves and got an 8.75 to obtain the first place.

The Peruvian surfer arrived at the shore without knowing the results and once his fellows told him, he was all smiles. De la Rosa said: “I was quite nervous, at first I got far away to get a big one and ensure myself a good scoring, but the conditions changed, it turned a bit stormy and it got very difficult for me to catch waves. Until I rode one that allowed me to obtain half of the points I needed. In the end, I didn’t know how much time I had but I got one wave in which I could do some moves.”

“No doubt one’s always a bit nervous. I think I’ve been surfing great throughout all the event and I had to close this.” Magoo thrilled sighed and looked up at the sky, and ended up saying: “Thank God, thank to the Virgin that, sent me that wave!”

The second place, in the Grand Masters division was for Paez from Tahiti, the third place for Licha from Puerto Rico, and the fourth was for David Malherbe from South Africa.

The last heat of the day, the Kahunas’ final, was the key heat for the definition of the team’s positions. Because, the Puerto Ricans would get the first place on the nation’s competition, unless one of the two South African athletes, that were leading the division, won the heat. Chris Knutsen and Rudi Plamboom confronted Javier Huarcaya from Peru and Gilles Asenjo from France. The first one honoured his country, finding the best waves and making large, stylish carves to win the gold, giving to South Africa the victory on the team’s competition. The second place was for Huarcaya, third was Asenjo and Plamboom fourth.

A thrilled Knutsen, once the event was over, said: “It was a long way to the final, in the last few days the waves went really down and we were all worried about that. But today the Great Lord of the Ocean made a good job for us and we could see an excellent surfing level. I’m really happy that I won the last heat, for me and my country.”

Regarding the fundamental victory he obtained for the position of his country, Knutsen said: “I didn´t know that, I´m just very happy to come back home as a winning country. My team was very supportive the whole time we were here, we trained hard for this event, especially me, because I´m the old one it paid off for me.  I just thank my family for supporting me through my training and allowing me to spend the money to come here, the work is done for me.”

The World Masters Surfing Championships has come to an end perfectly, in good conditions to guarantee a fair competition and a great Sport show. The President of the International Surfing Association, Fernando Aguerre, said: “From California in the name of the ISA I send my warmest regards to all competitors, staff of the event and public around the world. I have watched this event from California, since health reasons did not allow me to personally attend the competition as I had planed.

This great ISA World Masters Surfing Championship has finished today in Puerto Rico, the heart of the Caribbean.
This is only the first step in this new era for Master surfers around the world, competing in their National Surfing Teams.

Sudáfrica gana el Mundial Masters

El equipo sudafricano se consagró Campeón Mundial Masters en el marco de los Porta del Sol ISA World Masters Surfing Championships, que culminaron hoy en un día de excelentes olas tubulares de 10 a 15 pies de cara, quebrando en la hermosa playa Marías, Rincón, Puerto Rico.

Juan Ashton surfeando como local, junto a Magoo De la Rosa de Perú y a Chris Knutsen de Sudáfrica se llevaron la medalla de oro en las divisiones Masters, Grand Masters y Kahunas, respectivamente.

Tal como estaba anunciado, la potente marejada de noroeste arribó sin piedad a las costas de Rincón, haciendo que las etapas finales del evento sean llevadas a cabo en condiciones grandes, con los atletas eligiendo tablas bien más grandes que en los días anteriores, para así obtener lo mejor de las olas.

Se realizaron las dos rondas finales del repechaje y las finales del evento. Puerto Rico, que venía liderando la clasificación por países, con su equipo completo escalado en la competencia, perdió cuatro atletas camino a la final, pero se mantuvo en pelea, palmo a palmo contra Sudáfrica hasta la última serie del día, que dio un resultado favorable para los africanos.

La primera final en entrar al agua fue la de Masters. Juan Ashton fue el líder de la serie de principio a fin. Haciendo una buena selección de olas y atacándolas con buenos off the lips y cutbacks, el boricua sumó 9.25 y 7.25 en sus dos mejores olas para vencer al tahitiano Heifara Tahutini –segundo-, al brasilero Wagner Pupo –tercero- y al sudafricano John McCarthy –cuarto-.

Una vez fuera del agua, un feliz Ashton, acompañado por toda la hinchada puertorriqueña declaró: “Esto se siente increíble, ganar en Puerto Rico y con olas grandes, estoy muy contento. Hoy intenté enfocarme en dos cosas: encontrar las olas y hacer maniobras verticales. En la serie que me había llevado al repechaje, me desesperé y surfee olas de mala calidad. Hoy me dije que iba a hacer lo contrario y eso fue lo que me dio este resultado. Estoy disfrutando mucho de este título en mi país”.

Por su lado, en la Grand Masters, la serie fue bien más peleada y no fue definida hasta los últimos 90 segundos. El local Alberto Licha comenzó liderando con dos olas de seis de promedio, pero luego, el tahitiano Heinere Paez se colocó en la punta combinando 14.75. Mientras que el peruano Magoo de la Rosa, que se había mantenido durante mitad de la serie sin tomar olas, comenzó anotando un 7.10 luego de completar un excelente floater en una ola con buen tamaño, quedando en necesidad de un de 7.66.

Con menos de un minuto y medio contando en el reloj, De la Rosa encontró una derecha que rellenó de buenas maniobras de backside para recibir 8.75 que lo catapultaron al primer lugar.

El peruano llegó a la orilla sin saber el resultado final y una vez que sus compatriotas se lo informaron fue pura alegría. Comentó luego de su serie: “Estaba bien nervioso, al comienzo me fui bien para adentro a buscar una de las buenas y asegurar un buen puntaje, pero las condiciones cambiaron, se pusieron un poco tormentosas y se hizo difícil agarrar las olas. En la mitad de la serie encontré una que me dejó a mitad de camino para conseguir lo que necesitaba. Al final, ni sabía cuánto tiempo faltaba pero me tocó una en la que pude hacer varias maniobras”.

“Sin dudas que siempre hay nervios. Creo que he estado corriendo bien durante todo el evento y tenía que sellar esto”. El peruano suspiró emocionado y miró al cielo, completando: A Dios gracias, gracias a la virgen que, ¡carajo me la mandó!”.

En segundo lugar en la Grand Masters se ubicó Paez de Tahití, en tercero Licha de Puerto Rico y en cuarto David Malherbe de Sudáfrica.

La última serie del día, la final de Kahunas, fue fundamental para la definición de la posición por equipos, pues alguno de los dos sudafricanos escalados en la misma, debían vencer, de lo contrario, los boricuas se harían con el primer lugar por naciones. Chris Knutsen y Rudi Plamboom se enfrentarían a Javier Huarcaya de Perú y a Gilles Asenjo de Francia. El primero se encargó de honrar su patria, encontrando las mejores olas y realizando en ellas largas y estilosas curvas para ganar el oro y darle a Sudáfrica la victoria en la clasificación por equipos. En segundo se ubicó Huarcaya, en tercero Asenjo y en cuarto Plamboom.

Un emocionado Knutsen, una vez terminado el evento comentó: “Fue un camino largo hasta la final, en los últimos días las olas realmente bajaron mucho y todos la pasamos preocupados por eso. Pero hoy el gran Señor del Océano hizo un buen trabajo para nosotros y pudimos ver un excelente nivel de surfing. Yo estoy realmente muy feliz por haber ganado la última serie, para mí y mi país”.

Con respecto a lo fundamental de su victoria para la posición final de su país, Knutsen comentó: “Yo no sabía eso, pero me pone más contento aún. Mi equipo me ha apoyado muchísimo durante toda nuestra estadía por aquí; hemos entrenado mucho para este evento, yo especialmente porque soy el más viejo de todos. Realmente estoy muy agradecido con mi familia por el apoyo que me ha dado durante el tiempo de preparación y por permitirme gastar el dinero para llegar aquí. Considero que hemos hecho un gran trabajo”.

El segundo ISA World Masters Surfing Championships ha llegado a su fin con broche de oro, en condiciones que garantizaron una competencia justa y un gran espectáculo deportivo. El Presidente de la International Surfing Association, Fernando Aguerre, expresó lo siguiente al respecto: “A todos los competidores, staff y publico alrededor del mundo, les envío un muy calido saludo desde California, desde donde he asistido a este maravilloso Mundial Masters de la ISA, por medio del webcast -motivos de salud me impidieron viajar a Puerto Rico, pero mi corazón ha estado con ustedes toda la semana-.

Este gran Mundial Masters de la ISA terminó hoy en Puerto Rico, el corazón del Caribe. Éste es solo el principio de una nueva etapa que se abre para los Masters de todo el mundo, para competir en sus equipos Nacionales.

Gracias a Ricardo Lucke y al staff de la Federación de Surfing de Puerto Rico, gracias a todos los hermanos puertorriqueños por darnos su calor y calidez humana y gracias a todas las delegaciones, por haber venido a Puerto Rico.

Que esta demostración de camaradería entre los surfistas Masters de todo el mundo, sea un ejemplo de paz en este mundo que tanto la necesita”.
