INAUGURAL HOBGOOD CHALLENGE PRES. BY PACSUN SET TO KICK OFF IN INCREDIBLE SURF

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 January, 2007 : - - HUNTINGTON BEACH, California – The inaugural Hobgood Challenge presented by PacSun is set to kick off February 1, 2007 in stellar conditions.  The event, which features six surfers under 19 handpicked by 2001 ASP World Champion C.J. Hobgood and fellow Globe team rider and twin brother, Damien, promises to provide a glimpse into the future of surfing as they tackle the South Pacific perfection of Micronesia’s Caroline Islands.

The final invites went to Dion Atkinson (AUS), Dusty Payne (HAW), Clay Marzo (HAW), Owen Wright (AUS), Eric Geiselman (USA) and Garut Widiarta (IND). These six surfers will compete in a variety of non-traditional formats for top prize in this ASP-sanctioned Pro Junior specialty event.

“Every time I am around and surfing with these really good up-and-coming kids, it just blows me away to see what they are doing and where they're taking surfing,” says current number seven on the ASP World Tour ratings Damien Hobgood. “I can't wait to see where they take it to at The Hobgood Challenge.”

The event, held in the South Pacific at the site of SURFING Magazine’s 2006 World Champion’s Trip, a world class and highly challenging wave, will be documented in a series of six Globe produced webisodes airing on PacSun.com starting March 1, 2007. “Some of my most memorable and rewarding times early in my pro career were being able to participate in progressive new contest formats as one of only a few selected surfers,” recalled C.J. Hobgood.

“Those events played a crucial role in the development of my surfing career, and when they went away several years ago, it created a void for the next generation. Damien and I are hosting our Challenge as a means to give this next group of pro surfers the same great opportunities that we were given.”

The 2007 Hobgood Challenge is presented by PacSun, proud supporter of youth surfing through their sponsorship of the USA Surf Team.
