No Fear Koastal Kaos Event #5 Goes Off In La Jolla

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 February, 2007 : - - The Koastal Kaos Amateur Series set up shop beneath its two-story beachfront tent condo at La Jolla Shores for event #5. The talent pool in the series is on the rise, bolstered by increasing support (and prize money!) from title sponsor No Fear and media coverage by Fox 6 News.

Event #5 took flight beneath partly sunny skies, calm winds, and fun 1-3 foot glassy surf for the early round heats. Every heat winner pocketed $10  ($20 for men’s division). Spectators and curious tourists witnessed quite a show on Saturday, as competitors put on a clinic on how to dissect, dismember and otherwise destroy small waves. Overnight, however, the surf would double in size, setting the stage for amplified action on Sunday.

On Saturday afternoon the heats were incredibly close— except the Grom final. Taylor Clark destroyed the final with a whopping total of 16 (out of 20). The Boys division was a closer fight but the results were the same. Taylor once again took it to the older groms while surfing up a division and won the Boys class as well. Erin Rietow was untouchable in the Women’s division as she posted a 9.5 and an 8 to cruise to an easy win! Why is she not on the ‘QS?

On Sunday the Juniors class was all Hunter Lysaught as he held home court and dominated the 20-minute final. Pedro Diaz proved that you don’t have to be a 20 something or younger to rip! He exploded in all of his Masters heats and was killing it! Rusty Phillipy made it extremely close but an ill fated of the lip left him just short!

The Men’s division was a close affair between Alex Ganguli and Colin Wagschal but in the end youth beat experience and Alex was left holding $100 cash in his hand and the victory. After continuously going vertical and throwing aerial moves there was nothing left for Ganguli to do but figure out how to spend his money!
