Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 February, 2007 : - - COOLANGATTA, Australia – Round 1of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Samsung will begin this morning at 8am in 3 to 4 foot (1 to 1.2 metre) waves at Snapper Rocks. Following a lengthy deliberation, event organizers and surfers have opted to run Round 1 of the men’s event to ensure that competition gets underway in the best possible conditions.

"We will run Round 1 today and while conditions are onshore, they are better than yesterday," Contest Director Rod Brooks said. "We know the wave face is clean, but there are onshore winds.  These conditions are expected to continue for the next three or four days ahead of a tropical cyclone. We're not sure at this stage whether the cyclone will be favorable or unfavorable so we're covering our options by running Round 1 of the men's today."

A slew of dynamic match-ups will comprise the 16 heats of Round 1 including Heat 9 where local indigenous Australian and Trials Winner Dale Richards (AUS) will face off against former Foster’s ASP World Champion Andy Irons (HAW), and Heat 8 where wildcard Julian Wilson (AUS) will do battle with reigning and eight-time Foster’s ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA).

Le QUIKSILVER PRO GOLD COAST : La compétition « le Slater Concept » en attendant le premier round
 
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 February, 2007 : - - C'est parti ! La première manche du Championnat du Monde de Surf WCT Masculin, le QUIKSILVER PRO et l'épreuve inaugurale du Championnat du Monde de Surf WCT Féminin, le ROXY PRO, ont officiellement débuté en Australie.

Selon la tradition, l'élite mondiale masculine et féminine du shortboard est réunie sur la vague de Snapper Rocks sur la Gold Coast australienne pour débuter la saison 2007. Après le sacre historique de Kelly Slater (USA, Team Quiksilver) pour la 8ème fois de sa carrière fin 2006 et le fulgurant come-back de l'australienne Layne Beachley qui compte désormais 7 titres de Championne du Monde (le record), le World Championships Tour 2007 s'annonce passionnant.

Cette saison, on surveillera particulièrement les performances de Jérémy Florès (France, Team Quiksilver) dont c'est le baptême du feu. Vainqueur du circuit WQS (World Qualifying Series) 2006, antichambre du WCT, le prodige réunionnais est le plus jeune surfer de l'histoire à se qualifier pour le circuit d'élite du surf professionnel masculin (à 18 ans seulement !) et également le seul représentant européen parmi les 45 surfers en lice pour le titre 2007.

Les surfers du WCT Masculin n'ont pas encore débuté le premier round du Quiksilver Pro. Si l'épreuve masculine est donc en attente, les jolies vagues de 1m à 1,50 m de Snapper Rocks ont permis de lancer mardi les premières séries du "Slater Concept", un format de compétition original et expérimental conçu par le champion en personne.

L'affiche du 1er round du Quiksilver Pro, reportée à demain, jeudi 1er mars, est de toute beauté. Le Champion en titre Kelly Slater sera opposé à deux redoutables australiens, tous deux membres du Team Quiksilver : le très expérimenté Danny Wills et la star montante du surf pro masculin Julian Wilson.

Le français Jérémy Florès a hérité d'un premier round épineux puisqu'il sera confronté à l'ancien Champion du Monde américain CJ Hobgood (vainqueur du WCT en 2001) et au sud-africain Royden Bryson, 4ème du classement WQS 2006.
