Lizzard Nandos Surf Pro Set for Durban’s New Pier
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 February, 2007 : - - Uniquely South African surf wear brand Lizzard and fast-food outlet Nandos, have once again joined forces to bring you the one star Association of Surfing Professionals World Qualifying Series Lizzard Nandos Surf Pro, presented by the Weekend Witness, which is set for Durban’s New Pier from 6- 9 April 2007. One of only three Association of Surfing Professionals WQS events to be staged on the African continent in 2007; this unique contest is renowned not only for its prime location but also for the invaluable opportunity it affords local surfers to earn vital ASP International ratings points, which count towards their overall standing at the end of the year, while competing at home. Inaugurated in 2003, the event has grown from strength to strength, with Lizzard raising the bar in 2004 by upgrading their Men’s division to a World Qualifying Series competition, offering a prize money purse of US$10 000 (R70 000), while successfully putting both Durban and South Africa on the international surfing map.
Crowning the who’s who in South African surfing, including former WCT surfer David Weare (2003 & 2004), WQS campaigner Daniel Redman (2005) and reigning Surfing South Africa Pro Surf Tour champion Warwick Wright (2006), the event attracts an infinite pool of local talent who jump at the annual opportunity to compete for this prestigious title. This year is no exception with two of New Pier’s foremost performers Antonio Bortoletto (Durban) and Gavin Roberts (Scottburgh) promising an all out assault at this year's event. The Lizzard Nandos Surf Pro also features the biggest Pro Junior Men’s division on the African continent. With a Grade 1 ASP international rating and an incredible US$5 000 (R30 500) in prize-money, the event will host a plethora of both South African and international campaigners, including ASP World Junior Champion Jordy Smith (Umbilo) who will return to New Pier to defend his title.
South Africa’s female surfers will also have their time in the sun during the Surfing South Africa PST 2A rated, R5000 women’s division, which will be highlighted by the presence of former ASP Women’s World number two Heather Clark (Port Shepstone). Despite retiring from international competition, Clark has returned, with force, to the local circuit and will be a treat to watch at this event.
The Lizzard Nandos Surf Pro is one of the most anticipated events on the professional surfing calendar and organisers are looking forward to a large international contingent. The ASP WQS events are sanctioned by ASP Africa and the Women’s event is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa. The event is co sponsored by Nestle Pure Life Water, Bokomo, Bavaria, Durban Africa and Clayton Surfboards.
