'Premier Surf Forecaster Predicts Swell Time for Festival'
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 March, 2007 : - -The systems that have been trying to go cyclone up North have been temporarily delayed due to mild shear but that’s about to change. They are even closer to declaration now and will most likely be Tropical cyclones in the next 24-48 hours as the upper atmosphere is still conducive to cyclogenisis and the shear pattern is diminishing.
We can expect at least one Tropical Cyclone to start up off of the N/E Australian coast on the weekend and initially move toward the W/SW. Most forecasts are calling for future movement to be to the S/SE after a day or two and this puts the system into our wave window early next week.
Interestingly, one computer model indicates that the cyclone MAY get cradled by a large High in the Tasman, slowing its Southerly movement and possibly stalling it in place Just North of Fraser Island for the entire week. That would be interesting, but that’s a long way off and all computer models have a high degree of falibity, so for the moment, let’s just expect it to pass along offshore and Eventually head off toward New Zealand as an extra-tropical storm.
In any case, I’m still expecting the surf to come up sharply from the NE early next week and the winds to be strong; NE on the Gold Coast, SE on the Sunshine Coast. As the Cyclone progresses, winds will become more generalized from the SE along both coasts. Depending upon how this system evolves, we could see surf well over 6’, (2 metres+), and ALL beachgoers are advised to be extremely cautious. Swimmers at the flags only!
Coastalwatch.com National surf Reporter John Charlton (JC) says, “Let’s just hope that the cyclone does track off in a south easterly direction and that we receive some big, clean swell. The worst possible scenario would be for it to stay close to the coast and bombard us with huge seas, very strong winds & heavy rain. Fingers crossed for the first option.”
