Foster’s Rookies Take Inaugural Foster’s Surf Showdown
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 March, 2007 : - -Living up to all expectations the inaugural Foster’s Surf Showdown was a roaring success as the best surfers in the world battled it out for their countries. From go to whoa the heart-felt patriotism was evident as the teams from Australia, Brazil, the USA, Hawaii, South Africa and the mixed bag of Foster’s Rookies dug deep into their collective bags of aerial trickery to blast their opponents into insignificance.
The first heat was savage with the Rookies downing South Africa and Brazil to earn their place in the final. The passionate band of Aussies followed suit and eliminated The USA and Hawaii and the stage was set for a dynamic showdown of monumental proportions.
The Australians fielded their local heroes Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning the Rookies sent out aerial master Josh Kerr and hot shot Frenchmen Jeremy Flores and it was on!
Fanning and Parkinson, two good mates who have grown up surfing together at Snapper Rocks for over two decades were always going to be hard to stop. They laid into the Snapper Rocks faces carving some huge forehand gouges.
Kerr meanwhile unleased a barrage of huge spinning airs and alley oops and had the crowd baying for more.
Parkinson and Fanning kicked on, lifting their respective games to grab some airtime but Kerr and Flores simply defied gravity. In the end Team Australia just couldn’t catch the youngsters despite them riding an excellent tandem wave where both Fanning and Parkinson punted down the line.
Kerr and Flores sealed the deal and showed that the Foster’s Rookies will be a force to be reckoned with.
“This was the inaugural Foster’s Surf Showdown and we were treated to some exciting nation versus nation action in a teams format,” Foster’s Surf Ambassador Toby Martin said. “We’re excited that today’s event went so well, and although we’re still toying with the format, we expect that the exhibition will be a great success this season. Today proved that the Foster’s Rookies were the top dogs to beat showing an incredible array of talent.”
Josh Kerr, the nominated captain for the rookies, was elated.
“I’m just so stoked we’ve come out on top,” Kerr said. “Jeremy (Flores) and I just went out there and tried to go big. I’ve been surfing here my whole life so it feels great to get one off of Joel (Parkinson) and Mick (Fanning). I’m really excited, we have a really deep talent pool in the rookies and I’m looking forward to the rest of the event.”
