Noosa Kicks off Festival in fine Style

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 March, 2007 : - -  Hundreds of people gathered on Noosa Main Beach to officially welcome in the Festival of Surfing for 2007. The week long event attracting over four hundred international guests and domestic surfers who each year make the pilgrimage to the Sunshine State to part in one of the largest celebrations on the surfing calendar.

Led by the Hawaiian Watermen, the traditional ‘Mixing of the Waters’ ceremony was blessed with the added bonus of the Hawaiian Dance Troupe. World Champions past and present were joined by a public flotilla to carry the ceremonial bowl containing waters brought together from around the globe, then Brian Keaulana (Hawaii) poured the contents into the glistening waters off Noosa Main Beach.

It was an emotional opening said festival president Norm Innis,”It’s just great to see so many here for the opening and by the amount of atmosphere I’m sure this year’s focus is on fun”. Oddly enough, that embraces the mission statement of the event’s presenting sponsor Global Surf Industries whose motto is “Life’s better when you Surf”.

Organiser are optimistic that the recent swell  predictions reporting four metre seas to arrive in the next twenty four hours will ring true, providing ideal surf for the first day of competition.

With eighteen divisions to be contested there’s no doubt the event will have something for everyone according to contest director Alan Atkins, “we will start off the pro rounds to take advantage of the conditions and swell, before moving into the age categories, then we will get the pro’s back in the for round two, while Wednesday will feature age categories right across the day”.

Noosa Festival of Surfing supporting partners includes: Global Surf Industries, Sunshine Coast Daily, Queensland Events, Tourism Noosa, Noosa Council, ASP Australasia, Coastalwatch, Surfing Australia.
