    Central Surf Single Fin Contest

    Hickory Bay Canterbury New Zealand
    3 March 2007

2007 Central Surf Single Comp run down

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 March, 2007 : - - The 2007 Central Surf Single Fin Contest was just awesome. Beautiful sunny weather and pumping 4 -5 foot waves. This was all on offer at Hickory Bay on Banks Peninsula, Canterbury, New Zealand, last Saturday 3rd March due to no surf at all on the local Christchurch beaches.

The call was made at 7am down at the meeting place of Sumner Beach and the core crew of competitors and spectators alike headed over to the bay for the day. When all the competitors had arrived at Hickory bay and saw the primo pumping waves, a new format was arranged so they could get the most time in the water. All the finals got to surf twice maximizing there scoring potential for the judges on the land.

The surfing was just spectacular to say the least with big carves and awesome tube riding on the cards. It took guts to surf these waves and the guys and girls in the event were totally committed which showed in there surfing and heavy wipeouts on the day. Three broken boards on the day at the beach by other surfers visiting Hickory Bay saw how much punch these wave had.

Surfers that impressed throughout the day where Jamie Patten and Manu Schafer with their ability to slot into some sick tubes and Andrew Pickering with his big bottom turns and hooks in the wave pocket.Colourful character Phil Woods (aka Aaron Stanley) from Westport who was styling in his bad dress sense for the day on land also put in a top performance in the water.

Not to be outdone buy the guys women's competitors Kate Blair and Sophia Moore also paddled into some sizey wave drops. A big thanks to all the sponsors and people involved in the event as well as the generosity of the farmer at Hickory Bay for letting us set up right on the beach .Sweet.
