Harrison Roach wins opening round of Golden Breed Noserider division
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 March, 2007 : - - The Golden Breed Noserider was the feature of the day at the Noosa Festival of Surfing. Thirty two of the finest nose riders ever seen at the event gathered to put their best foot forward on the perfect waves of Noosa’s First Point.
World Champion Josh Constable (QLD, Noosa) who has already made it through to the quarter finals of his pet event, the Odyssey 20/20 Pro, showed why he is considered by many to be one of the most versatile in the sport.
Constable clocked up an incredible 64.07 second nose ride and was by far the highest scorer for the day. He was elated with the outcome especially considering he just went in it to get another chance to surf the fun waves which again delivered on cue, “I think a lot of people get the impression that I’m strictly a high performance surfer, but I actually made the final of this event the first two years running and this is a great way to illustrate I can still perform at this level too”, said Josh.
Sixties surfing icon Steve Walden of the USA impressed the crowd with a stylish display of nose riding, demonstrating all the characteristic poses from the golden era of nose riding much to the delight of the large crowd.

Noosa local Jai Lee, who features in Steve Cleveland’s latest international surf film ‘Another State of Mind’, grew up surfing First Point and was the second highest scorer of the day with a 55.37 second nose ride. Lee totally enjoyed his time in the water, “Noosa was picture postcard perfect, clean, clear, beautiful, crisp, fun size waves that became hollow on the inside of the break, allowing for some good nose riding opportunities”, said Jai.
Matt Cuddihy QLD, Noosa) is the defending champion having made a clean sweep of it in 2005 and 2006. Cuddihy progressed through his round one encounter with a total of 20.60 seconds.
Australian surfing great Nat Young has based his family in Noosa for the Festival. Daughter Nava, sons Beau and Bryce are all competing in the Festival. Bryce surfed in heat five of the nose rider today, but was unsuccessful, placing third behind Gold Coast surfer Jackson Close and Andrew Warhurst.
Beau Young is also performing in Noosa at the Delightful Rain concert on Friday night. The former World Champion will contest the ‘Champion of Champions’ this weekend.

Tennis ace Pat Rafter will swap his racket for a block of wax and a surfboard too when he competes in the Global Surf Industries One Design Invitational and the Golden Breed Retro events later this week.
Seventeen year old surfing dynamo Harrison Roach (QLD, Noosa) was another local to produce the goods on day three of competition. Roach won his heat with a 22.86 second nose ride and took full advantage of his local knowledge, securing a seat in the second round courtesy of some excellent wave selection.
It was another successful day for the event, the combination of fine weather and picturesque surf, meshed perfectly with the beauty of the Noosa National Park backdrop. Many beachgoers opting to make the most of the day and enjoy the great spectator value on offer.
Contest Director Alan Atkins only too pleased with proceedings, “We have certainly scored some great conditions so far and one would have to remain optimistic, especially with the way things are continuing to develop off New Caledonia, we might see another swell before the weekends out”, Said Atkins.
