Noosa Festival of Surfing - World Longboarding Champion Josh Constable through to semi finals

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 March, 2007 : - - Reigning World Champion Josh Constable (Noosa, QLD) set the scene for an awesome battle this afternoon when the Odyssey 20/20 Men’s Pro Semi Finals take place around 1.30pm. Constable only caught two waves in his quarter final this morning and that is all the natural footer needed!

He posted a 9.33 for his first wave, and then scored an 8.70 for a total of 18.03 out of a possible 20.It was a repeat performance of yesterday for Josh who again holds the highest wave score and highest total score. Hawaii’s Bonga Perkins blitzed his quarter final against Harley Inlgeby (NSW, Coffs), Brett White (QLD, Noosa) and Ben Fesselet (QLD, Mudjimba).

Bonga scored a 9.23 with his opening ride and never looked threaten throughout the twenty minute duel, sealing victory with an 8.33 ride that brought much response from the spectator gallery.

Despite the convincing quarter final win Perkins remains low key, “The surf is good again today, but wave choice plays a big part out there and sometimes you seem to go with the flow and others against the grain. The tide will be falling for our semi’s so it should be fun”, said Perkins.

Young gun Ben Fesselet who is the current Australian Junior Champion was thrilled to progress to the quarter and praised the efforts of his rivals, “It’s great to have the internationals here, I don’t get to compete against the likes of these guys very often, so I am happy for the experience”, Said Ben.

Two time winner and defending champion Grant Thomas (QLD, Maroochydore) put in a solid display in his quarter final clash with Jackson Close(QLD, Gold Coast), Christian Wach (USA, Orange County) and Ollie Shaw  (Victoria). The ‘Thomas blew out of the barrier as soon as the opening siren sounded and notched up a 8.00 point ride , then backed it up with a 7.83 to set up a clash of the titans in the semi finals this afternoon.

The stocky natural foot eager to surf the point on the lower tide, “Once the tide drops out a bit the inside section should be reeling off and even the outside part of the break will be fast and hollow, so I just want to get amongst it, said Grant.  Seventeen year old Noosa local Harrison Roach stormed his way into today’s semi’s with a late charge that saw him awarded a 8.17 by the judges which was enough to win the heat.

Roach pleased with his come from behind win, “I was sitting there just hoping I could find the right wave to get a high score, I knew I needed one and had to be patient, then it just popped up right in front of me”, said Harrison. The $7,500 Odyssey 20/20 Men’s Pro Semi Finals will begin around 1.30pm today. The $2,500 Banana Boat Women’s Pro semi finals will follow, and then the $5,000 Golden Breed Noserider quarter finals will be on.
