Local Girl Wins Roxy Surf Jam Cape Town

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 March, 2007 : - - A busy Cape Town filled with cyclists saw the event organisers of the Roxy Surf Jam presented by Virgin Mobile bring the event forward by a day. Friday saw six heats being run off at Long Beach in excellent conditions. Saturday morning dawned cold and misty at Long Beach, and with the mist showing no signs of lifting, the event went mobile and headed over to Muizenberg.

The waves at Muizenberg were in the two-to-three foot range and were fun and highly contestable. The competitive U14 division saw goofy-footer Bianca Buitendag from George edge out Bluff local Heidi Palmboom. Alex Morris (CT) was third and Durban’s Sarah Baum came fourth.

In the U16 division it was Cape Town’s Danielle Johnson who emerged victorious. Danielle put up a solid performance against the likes of Tanika Hoffman (CT) who came second, Faye Zoetmulder (CT) who surfed well to place third, ahead of Durban’s Kirsty Delport, who  was a bit disappointed with her fourth placing.

Adele Nortje from Mossel Bay blazed through the U18 division, winning convincingly against the likes of Chantelle Rautenbach (Mbos), Tarryn Kyte (CT) and Lisa Mace from Kommetjie. Cape Town’s Tarryn Chudleigh blasted through the U20 Pro Junior Women’s division to deservedly take the win from Bianca Buitendag from George.

“So stoked,” said Chudleigh after the event. “ The waves were really fun and I got some good sets. I had lefts and rights in the final and they were all pretty good.”  Chudleigh was quick to heap praises on her competitors as well. “Bianca Buitendag was ripping the whole day, and so was Holly Armstrong.” When asked about future plans, Tarryn was upbeat. “I’m just going to surf all the events that I can, and keep on winning as many as I can.”

Lisa Mace (CT) placed third and Holly Armstrong (CT) came in fourth in this super-competitive division.

This was the first Surf Jam of the year. The next event will take place on the 26 and 27 May in Durban. The final event on the Roxy calendar is the Roxy Wahine Cup, the biggest stand-alone girls event in the country. The Roxy Surf Jams have proven to be very popular amongst the girl surfers in South Africa, and have helped to launch our girls onto the Pro Tour.

The Roxy Surf Jams are going to be covered on Boardriders TV, which is set for extensive broadcast time on Supersport.  The Roxy Surf Jams presented by Virgin Mobile, is proudly supported by Saltwater Girl and Roxy Eyewear. The Roxy Surf Jams are sanctioned by Surfing South Africa and form part of the Pro Surf Tour
