Lizzard Presents Biggest Pro Junior Men’s Event in Africa
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 March, 2007 : - - Junior surfers need look no further than Durban’s famous New Pier for the biggest Pro Junior Surfing event on the African continent, the Lizzard Nandos Surf Pro, presented by the Weekend Witness, which takes place from 6- 9 April 2007.
Boasting a Grade 1 ASP International rating as well as an impressive R35 0000 (US$5000) in prize-money, the Lizzard Nandos Surf Pro is expected to attract a plethora of both local and international junior talent. Defending Pro Junior Men’s Champion Jordy Smith (Umbilo), who currently holds the ASP World Pro Junior title, has confirmed he will be back to defend his crown at this lucrative event.
Few could forget Smith’s blistering 2006 performance, which saw him execute the perfect combination of speed, power and flow that earned him two near perfect nine point rides, leaving his opponents needing a combination of two rides to beat him. With Smith looking more polished than ever and his rivals growing increasingly ambitious by the day, all are expecting an almighty clash when the Pro Junior surfers hit the water over the Easter weekend.
The event is open to surfers aged 20 years and younger, all of whom will have the unique opportunity to compete before a global surfing audience as the Pro Junior event runs alongside the one star ASP World Qualifying Series Pro Men’s event, which is likely to include a number of top international contenders.
According to the Raymond Gerardy of Lizzard International, “Our investment in Pro Junior surfing is the key to the future growth of top level surfing in South Africa. It gives our juniors the experience to crack it on the WQS. With an increase in top local level junior events, we are building the foundation for future South African world champions.”
