Top Seeds Prepare for Easter Hunt at Lizzard Nandos Surf Pro
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 March, 2007 : - - This year’s ‘Easter Hunt’ will be substantially more lucrative than a few chocolate eggs in shiny wrappers for South African pro surfers, who will take to the waves of Durban’s New Pier in search of the R100 000 prize money purse, on offer at the Lizzard Nandos Surf Pro, presented by the Weekend Witness.
South Africa’s first internationally rated surfing event of the year, the Lizzard Nandos Surf Pro, which takes place from 6- 9 April 2007, includes a One Star World Qualifying Series Pro Men’s, Grade 1 ASP International Pro Junior Men’s and 2A rated Surfing South Africa Women’s division.
Top seed David Weare (Durban) leads an accomplished Pro Men’s field, entering the event in the round of 32, where he will be eager to get his hands on the R70 000 Pro Men’s prize money purse.
A former ASP World Tour competitor and winner of this event in 2004, Weare (Durban) makes a welcome return to the event, having missed it in 2006 due to his WCT commitments. The explosive Durban surfer is focusing all of his efforts on the WQS this year, in order to requalify for the 2008 ASP World Tour and will be a treat to watch in Durban at Easter.
Joining him is second seed and current ASP World Junior Champion Jordy Smith (Umbilo), who is also the defending Lizzard Nandos Pro Junior Men’s Champion. Smith is fresh off a victory at the four star WQS in Australia, and has set his sights on both the Pro Junior Men’s and Pro Men’s titles.
The third, fourth and fifth seeds are Corey Ziems, the only Australian surfer in the event, New Pier’s revered Antonio Bortoletto (Snake Park), and defending Pro Men’s Champion Warwick Wright (Durban).
