Quiksilver Pro Africa: Local Boys “Wok” and Fahrenfort Awarded Final Wildcards

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 April, 2007 : - -  With the biggest WQS (World Qualifying Series) surfing event, the Quiksilver Pro Africa presented by Virgin Mobile in association with Resolution Health, rumbling into South Africa, all local surfers have been waiting patiently to see who will be on the receiving end of the final two wildcard slots. It is the continent’s first 6 star prime ASP WQS event and takes place from April 15 to 22 at New Pier on the Durban Beachfront. 

While the sponsor wildcards have already been announced (Keegan Nel from East London, Brandon Jackson from Durban, Dane Reynolds from California and Joan Duru from France) the final two wildcards are in the hands of ASP Africa, the governing body of professional surfing in South Africa.

Durban surfer Warwick ‘Wok’ Wright was announced as one of the ASP Africa wildcards for his victory on the local circuit last year. Wright was crowned the 2006 ASP Africa champion at the Zigzag Magazine Awards function at the end of last year. The New Pier local will be seeded directly into the last seeded round of 96 surfers.

The second wildcard was awarded to Western Province surfer Damien ‘Dooma’ Fahrenfort from Kommetjie. Damien, who has been pursuing his dream on the WQS (World Qualifying Series of Surfing) tour, is the current highest placed South African WQS surfer not seeded into that round.

Wright calls the contest venue, New Pier, home and is extremely confident that local knowledge will help him to cause a couple of massive upsets and he was thrilled to hear about his wildcard selection. “The Quiksilver Pro is a huge event, and being seeded into a later round gives me a chance to watch some surfing, check the waves out and concentrate on a plan,” said Wright.

Wok is no stranger to achieving exceptional results, having an ISA world junior title under his belt as well as a win in a four star WQS. He is determined to use this event to catapult him into the top echelons of the WQS in his bid to qualify for the coveted WCT (World Championship Tour of Surfing) for 2008.
