Greatest Surfing Event in Africa Returns!

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 April, 2007 : - - Durban, South Africa - - In just over two months, the second longest running professional surfing event in the world, the six star World Qualifying Series Mr Price Pro, will kick off on Durban’s Golden Mile, drawing nearly 300 competitors from 11 nations, all out for a piece of glory and a share of the R 1 million prize money purse.

Crowning surfing’s world champions since the early seventies, the Mr Price Pro formerly known as the Gunston 500, captured the nation’s imagination with Shaun Tomson’s incredible six year winning streak from 1973 – 1978.

Twenty eight years later, it was Durban’s Ricky Basnett (Bluff) who brought South Africa out of the shadows, claiming an emphatic victory before thousands of supporters, ensuring the Mr Price Pro would settle in the minds and hearts of all South African’s, as the greatest surfing competition on the African continent.

Now in its 38th year, the Mr Price Pro remains one of the most prestigious events on the ASP World Qualifying Series tour, holding a six star rating for men and a five star rating for women, as well as valuable ASP points which count towards a surfer’s overall rating at the end of the year.

Thirty international entries have already been received including those of former ASP World Junior champion Kekoa Becalso (Haw), French champion Michael Picon and former ASP World Tour campaigner Toby Martin (Aus).

The event annually attracts the world’s most renowned competitors from three times ASP World Champion and former Mr Price Pro Champion Andy Irons (Hawaii), to surfing’s original style master Tom Curren (USA), 1999 ASP World Champion Mark Occhilupo and many more.

In keeping with the prestige of the event, Mr Price has for the last seven years set global standards on how to brand a surfing event. Transforming the beach into a world class surfing arena, the five storey Mr Price Pro is splashed with awe-inspiring surfing imagery that becomes a landmark along Durban’s Golden Mile, for ten action packed days in July.

Partnering with Internet Solutions, the Mr Price Pro will be at the cutting edge of web cast technology, broadcasting to over 5 million users worldwide via live video, audio and web scoring. In addition, the event site will be a WiFi hot spot, meaning laptop users will be able to log-on to the internet wirelessly while visitors to the beach will be able to retrieve live scores and image downloads on their cell phones, via Bluetooth technology.

In excess of one million tourists will travel to the event from 29 June- 8 July, including a throng of avid surfing supporters, international media and film crews, photographers, judges, officials, administrators and various industry players, providing all the essential ingredients for the most exciting surfing event of the year.

The Mr Price Pro is produced by Mr Price Sports Marketing on behalf of ASP Africa. Co sponsors of the event include Internet Solutions, Renault Cars and Holiday Inn Hotels.
