World Tandem Tour contest #3 scores at the Surf & Co

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 April, 2007 : - - It is under the generous sun and in a warm atmosphere that the French stage of World Tandem Tour took place. Waves were as expected by the Meteorological partner OSR there was impeccable organization, the public come in number, and 3 countries were represented as teams vied for the points to earn the 2007 ITSA world Tandem Tour title.

Two Californian teams made the event: the couples internationally ranked in the last ITSA world championships, third place (Caleb Wilborn and Wendy Lynn) and eleventh place (Travis Long with a new partner, Marie Vigne). Also making the trek for the event and bringing much Aloha, the Hawaiian team, currently ranked third in the WTT ranking, Bear Woznick and Kristl Apeles.

In the semi-finals, most of the French teams were able to confront the best world-ranked teams, and it is without surprise that four highest ITSA World championship ranked teams made it through to the final heat. This came as a small disappointment to the team of Loïc Caillet and Caroline Angibeau (recently named Wave Ski World Champions).

The Final heat took place in waves about one metre high, with a light southeasterly wind. From the outset the couple from Lacanau (Rico*Sarah) scored a wave of 16,19 pts (Shoulder stand, Totem, Small Arrow, Cobra, Swan, Reverse Knee stand, Pop).

This raised the level of challenge for the foreign teams in the water. In spite of a very beautiful performance, of which a wave in 14,41 pts (On arm back, Pyramid), the team of Caleb and the Wendy (USA) could not catch up to the French team. Bear and Kristl (HAW) attempted many extremes lifts (Arm to arm, Foot to hand, Cobra), but without too much success (9,91pts / 20)

In spite of the recently re-instated 3-second rule, due to the extremely difficult conditions, the head judge determined that lifts only had to be held for 2 seconds. A very beautiful performance was also given by the Franco/Américain team, Travis and Marie, who missed third place by just 1,26 pts (8,65 pts / 20).

An improvised demonstration of lifts at base of the podium generated a crowd for the award ceremony, and turned out to be one of the nicest moments of the day.

So, with a total of 16,44 pt/20, the french team (Rico*Sarah) won the third stage of the WTT with 1200pts and the 1200€ prize money, which will certainly help them make their trip to the next stage of the WTT event in California, which takes place April 21-22 in Huntington Beach, California, USA.

At that event, 32 couples are expected to compete, with a strong Hawaiian presence and many local teams ready to compete with the rest of the world. Thanks to ITSA organization for such a great event and we hope to see you all at Huntington Beach pier April 21 & 22nd for the next stage.

C’est sous un soleil généreux et dans une ambiance chaleureuse que l’étape française du World Tandem Tour se déroula. Des vagues le jour J comme prévus par le partenaire Météo OSR surf-report.com une organisation impeccable, un public venu en nombre et 3 pays représentés pour essayer de décrocher les précieux points nécessaires à conquérir le titre de Champion du monde ITSA 2007.

Deux couples californiens avaient effectivement fait le déplacement et pas des moindres, les couples classés N° 3 (Caleb Wilborn & Wendy Lynn) et N°11 (Travis Long & Marie Vigne) au dernier championnat du monde ISA. Avait aussi fait le déplacement le fabuleux couple Hawaiien porteur d’Aloha Bear Woznick & Kristl Apeles N° 12 Mondial et actuellement classé 3eme au classement WTT.

Les demi-finales furent le moyen pour la plupart des couples français de se confronter aux meilleurs mondiaux et c’est sans surprise que les quatre meilleurs au dernier championnat du monde ISA 2006 passèrent leur tour sans encombre. Petite déception tout de même pour Loiic Caillet & Caroline Angibeau (toute récente Championne du Monde de wave Ski) certainement en manque d’entrainement cet hiver qui ne parviennent pas à asseoir leur rang de N°15 Mondial acquis l’été dernier.

Tandem riders à Seignosse

La finale aura lieu dans des vagues d’un mètre avec un vent de sud-est léger. D’entrée de jeu le couple canaulais (Rico&Sarah) score une vague à 16,19 pts (Shoulder stand, Totem, Small Arrow, Cobra, Swan, Reverse Knee stand, Pop). Le défi à relever est lancé pour les couples étrangers et le niveau à l’eau très relevé. Caleb & Wendy (USA) resteront toujours derrière le couple français malgré une très belle prestation dont une vague à 14,41 pts (One arm back, Pyramide).

Bear & Kristl (HAW) tentent beaucoup de portés extrêmes (Arm to arm, Foot to hand, Cobra) sans trop de réussite (9,91pts/20) malgré la règle des 3 secondes reporté e à 2 secondes, dû aux conditions difficiles. Très belles prestations aussi des Franco/Américain Travis & Marie qui loupent la troisième marche du podium pour juste 1,26 pts (8,65 pts/20)

Une démonstration de portés improvisés au pied du podium rameutera les nombreux promeneurs pour la remise des prix qui s’avérera être un des moments les plus chaleureux de la journée. C’est donc avec un total de 16,44 pts/20 que notre couple national (Rico&Sarah) remporte les 1200pts, prennent la tète du classement WTT et repartent avec les 1200€ qui les aidera sûrement à partir pour la prochaine étape en Californie dans 15j.

Trente deux couples sont attendus pour cette épreuve avec une forte présence Hawaiienne et beaucoup de couples locaux prêts à en découdre avec le reste du monde. Nos Français en cas de victoire ramèneraient dès cette épreuve le fameux titre tant convoité de Champion du Monde ITSA et se positionneraient alors comme favoris pour le prochain Championnat du monde ISA en Août prochain à Waikiki.
