AUSTRALIA WINS BIG AT THE 2007 QUIKSILVER ISA WORLD JUNIOR SURFING        >  Espanol abajo

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 May, 2007 : - - In a thrilling day for junior surfing, team Australia and two of its young stars took home gold medals on the final day of the 2007 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Costa de Caparica, Portugal. 

Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons and Garrett Parkes are the new Quiksilver ISA World Junior Champions in the Girls Under 18 division and the Boys Under 16’s respectively, while their squad blew away the competition to take a second consecutive Team World Championship.   Brazil’s Jadson André scored the gold in the Under 18 Boys and led his nation to a silver in the overall team race.

The final day offered solid 3-5 foot (1-1.5 meter) waves – the best surf of the 8 day event - and each final featured spectacular showdowns at this, the “Junior Olympics of Surfing”.  For the first time in surfing’s history, the ISA judging panel included 8 judges.   During the final two days of competition, all 8 logged in scores  with the top and two lowest scores being dropped. The feedback for this innovation was entirely positive.

André, like all three individual winners, powered through the repechage rounds to make it to the final.  He took an early lead with huge turns in the powerful waves and outlasted fellow finalists Chris Friend (Australia), Charlie Brown (Brazil) and Cory Arrambide (USA).  André was in strong form throughout the event and his self assurance never wavered.

“I’m very happy because when I traveled to Portugal I told my family I was going to win,” said Andre.   “This was not easy and the fact that I got put into the repechage did not affect my confidence.  I knew I couldn’t hesitate and everything went right.”

Parkes, an electrifying fair haired surfer that viewers online compared to Mick Fanning, was at his absolute best in the final of the Under 16 Boys.  He locked in the highest single wave score of all of the finals (9.6 out of 10) where he did a series of vertical turns followed by an aerial reverse in the shorebreak.

“I’m over the moon, just frothing,” said Parkes. Parkes’s father in Australia recently suffered a stroke and the win was an emotional one.  “I dedicate my win to my Dad who was watching my heats on the webcast.  He’s the man,” he said. 

Parkes finished ahead of silver medalist and fellow Mini Gun (of the Quiksilver’s upcoming DVD Young Guns 3) Tahitian Tamoroa McComb, while New Zealand’s Matt Hewitt and Australia’s Davey Cathels won bronze and copper.    

Fitzgibbons avenged her last second defeat at last year’s event in Maresias, Brazil (she got silver then), by dominating the final of the Under 18 Girls this time around.  The silky smooth surfer admitted that her disappointment in Brazil was a motivating factor in her win.  “Last year I was winning but then went down in the last 20 seconds of the event,” Fitzgibbons said.  

“It was a devastating loss, but it made me focus on surfing to the best of my ability this year.  The level of girls surfing has been so high here and it made me lift my performance.” Fitzgibbons finished ahead silver medalist and teammate, Laura Enever while Sage Erickson (USA) Paige Hareb (New Zealand) took the bronze and copper.

Australia saw five of its surfers make the finals today and the team ran away with the team title for the second consecutive year.  Australia’s coach and 1994 ISA world champ, Sasha Stocker, was proud of his young surfers.  “Our team has worked very hard for this and I’m very happy with with our victory because all of the teams surfed so well.”

Brazil won the team silver followed by Hawaii’s bronze and New Zealand’s copper.  Hawaii won the ISA Aloha Cup tag team contest followed by Australia, France and South África.

In addition to their gold medals, André and Fitzgibbons also received coveted spots in the trials for the 2007 Quiksilver Pro France, the 2008 Pro Australia and the 2007 Roxy Pro Hawaii and 2008 Roxy Pro Australia where they will have a chance to surf against the likes of Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, Chelsea Hedges and Stephanie Gilmore.  Parkes win earned him 2500 dollars in credit towards entry fees of ASP events.

The entire event was notable for its exuberance and vitality and the sentiment on the beach was that this was the best ever event in the history of junior surfing.  Each team enthusiastically waved their nations’ colorful flags on the beach for each heat and, by the end, many surfers were seen in the uniforms of other teams – evidence of the strong friendships forged here. 

Adding to the positive vibes, the host team of Portugal also donated a surfboard to a competitor from Morocco, Amine El Jaffy, who could not afford one, and came to Portugal without competition equipment.

ISA President Fernando Aguerre awarded the surfers their medals in the event’s closing ceremony.  He was ecstatic about the success of this international event where everyone involved shared the ISA spirit of working together for a better world.  
“Congratulations to all the competitors and teams for all their efforts in Portugal,” said Aguerre. 

“The participants and judges did an excellent job. I would also like to thank Quiksilver for its strong support of junior surfing and the Caparica Surfing Club for its help in hosting the event. With great pleasure I announce we will be back in Portugal in October 2008 for the ISA World Games.”

The location of the 2008 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships has not yet been chosen but Aguerre revealed locations in France, Costa Rica and Ecuador are all in the running, with the final decision to be announced by June 15, 2007.

Victoria rotunda de Australia en el Mundial Quiksilver ISA Junior de Surf

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 May, 2007 : - - El Equipo Australiano de Surf fue el rotundo ganador de los Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships que finalizaron hoy en olas de 4 a 5 pies en la Praia da Mata de Costa de Caparica, Portugal. De las doce medallas entregadas hoy en las categorías inviduales, cinco fueron para Australia, incluyendo el oro y la plata en la categoría Damas, el oro y el cobre en la categoría Boys Sub. 16 y la plata en la categoría Boys Sub. 18.

Con estos resultados, Australia logró 6508 puntos en el Campeonato Mundial por equipos, dejando a su más cercano contrincante, Brasil, a más de 1500 puntos detrás. Con cinco mundiales juveniles realizados desde el 2003, tres ya son de Australia.

Uno de los responsables del equipo Campeón, Entrenador de Australia, Campeón Mundial de la ISA en 1994 y ex integrante del WCT. Sasha Stocker, explicó sobre la excelente actuación de su equipo: “Hemos hecho un trabajo duro, por casi un año entero. Surfing Australia ha establecido un programa que envuelve a los clubes, las competencias regionales, un centro de entrenamiento, etcétera.

Considero que todo esto junto al talento que ya existe, es lo que nos ha llevado a la victoria y a establecer el estándar en el nivel de surf del campeonato y esto es algo que me deja muy feliz”. Se disputaron nueve series a lo largo del día, con solo seis surfistas restando por categoría, evidentemente el nivel fue alto y las series muy peleadas en cada una de las tres categorías.

Entre las Damas, garantizaron su pasaje a la final por medio del evento principal, la australiana Laura Enver y la neozelandesa Page Hareb. A ellas se les unieron por medio del repechaje, la también australiana Sally Fitzgibbons y la estadounidense Sage Ericson.

La final comenzó con una buena ola de Enver, anotando 8.80 y colocándose rápidamente en la punta, Fitzgibbons le siguió el paso obteniendo 7.30 en su primera actuación, mientras que Ericson también marcó rápido 6.90. Por su parte, Hareb se mantuvo fuera de la disputa sin encontrar las olas adecuadas.

La serie se mantuvo peleada hasta que a los diez minutos, Fitzgibbons se encargó de combinar varios off the lips, snaps y cutbacks en una ola para recibir 8.70 que la catapultaron al liderazgo. Maniobrando fuerte, mejoró luego su sumatoria, con un 8.28, para luego administrar su victoria y convertirse en la nueva Campeona Mundial de Surf Junior. Su compatriota, Laura Enver se quedó con la Plata, Ericson con el Bronce y Hareb con el Cobre.

Luego de terminar su serie y ser cargada por sus compatriotas, Fitzgibbons feliz de la vida, dijo: “¡Esto es impresionante, no puedo describir el sentimiento, es realmente genial! Ha sido una semana larga, pero la competencia entera fue muy buena, el ambiente ha sido bien lindo. Yo sabía que las otras chicas surfeaban muy bien, por esto me fui a buscar mis dos olas e intentar obtener los puntajes más altos. Ahora sólo queda irme a casa y disfrutar del festejo”.

La siguiente medalla de Oro en ser definida fue la de Boys Sub. 16. Por medio del evento principal, se garantizaron un lugar en la final, el tahitiano Tamaroa McComb y el neozelandés Matt Hewitt. Mientras que por el repechaje llegaron los australianos Garret Parkes y Davey Cathels.

Una vez iniciada la final, el paseo fue relativamente fácil para quien había sido el mejor surfista de su categoría, Garret Parkes de Australia. Luego de hacer cinco fuertes maniobras en la misma ola, recibió 9.6, que respaldó luego con un 7.96 para dejar en necesidad de una combinación de olas a todos los atletas menos al tahitiano Tamaroa McComb.

Quien luego de recibir 7.84 en su quinta ola pasó al segundo lugar que mantuvo hasta el final. En tercero se ubicó el neozelandés Matt Hewitt y en cuarto el también australiano Davey Cathels.

Un feliz Parkes, dijo en el medio del festejo australiano: “Tuve mucha suerte, mi primer ola fue un 9.6 y eso ya me dejó confiado para el resto de la serie. De ahí en más intenté no preocuparme y dejar que las cosas pasen, estar tranquilo y surfear como si estuviera en casa y salió todo bien. Estoy sobre la luna, tan impresionado, feliz, trabajé mucho y lo logré”.

En la Boys Sub. 18, el cuadro de medallistas fue formado por el australiano Chris Friend y el brasilero Charlie Brown que llegaron por medio del evento principal y Jadson André y Cory Arrambide que lo hicieron por medio del repechaje.

No habían pasado ni cinco minutos de la serie y Jadson André ya tenía en su poder un 9.4, que consiguió luego de hacer dos excelentes tail slides en una ola de la serie y un 7.04 que obtuvo luego de completar una larga ola que rellenó de maniobras.

En ese momento, André tenía a todos sus contrincantes, con la excepción de Arrambide, quien también empezó rápido anotando 8.4, necesitando una combinación de olas. Si bien Chris Friend se fue acercando de a poco anotando un 7.72 y un 8.12 en su séptima y octava ola respectivamente –quedando en necesidad de un posible 8.08-, el tiempo pasó y la victoria fue para el brasilero.

Un característico festejo “a la brasilera” se realizó una vez que su campeón salió del agua, quien más adelante declaró: “Sabía que la serie sería difícil, tenía que esperar para conseguir olas buenas, pero gracias a Dios encontré rápido dos buenas que me permitieron administrar la batería un poco más tranquilo. Estoy muy feliz, ya había competido en este campeonato unas tres veces y nunca había ganado, esta vez dio todo cierto y pude ganar”.

La competencia terminó con la final del ISA Aloha Cup, que fue vencido por Hawai que dejó en segundo lugar a Australia, en tercero a Francia y en cuarto a Sudáfrica. Se procedió luego a realizar la entrega de las medallas, del ISA Perpetual Trophy, y del Trofeo del Presidente del Comité Olimpico Internacional –COI-. El Presidente de la ISA, Fernando Aguerre cerró la ceremonia diciendo:

“Felicito a todos los competidores e integrantes de los equipos por su esfuerzo en estar aquí presentes, a los jueces y jefes de jueces por llevar a cabo con éxito el primer panel de ocho jueces en la historia del surfing, al pueblo portugués por recibirnos, a los organizadores por el excelente evento que hicieron y a Quiksilver por tener la visión de apoyar al surfing juvenil mundial de la mano de la ISA. Estamos muy felices de saber que el año que viene volvemos a Portugal para los World Surfing Games en octubre del 2008”.

La quinta edición de los Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships han sido todo un éxito. Más allá de haber determinado a los mejores surfistas juveniles del mundo, reunió a 261 surfistas de 28 países en un solo lugar para compartir ocho días de paz y camaradería entre las distintas culturas, razas, lenguajes y naciones del planeta.

Como dijo Aguerre en su discurso de apertura, los eventos de la ISA continúan demostrando que un mundo sin guerras ni violencias, es totalmente posible. El próximo Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship se realizara en Francia, Ecuador o Costa Rica en el 2008. La decisión final será anunciada por la ISA el 15 de junio de 2007.
