Junior Surfers Take to the Waves Tomorrow

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 June, 2007 : - - Durban, KwaZulu- Natal -- South Africa’s richest Pro Junior surfing event, the 3A rated Mr Price Pro Junior, kicks off at Durban’s New Pier Friday 29 June, heralding the start to ten action packed days of world class surfing, at the premier six star ASP World Qualifying Series Mr Price Pro.

Nearly 70 U20 girls and boys from around South Africa will compete for the R12 500 prize money purse on offer in each division, as well as the prestigious Mr Price Pro Junior title. The event offers an incredible R4000 for a first place finish in both the Pro Junior Boys and Girls divisions, with second place taking home R2000, third place R1500 and fourth R1000.

In addition to the substantial prize money on offer,  junior surfers will compete for two wildcards slots into the six star Men’s and Five star women’s WQS events. The highest placed junior man will earn the last ASP Africa slot into the Men’s round of 144, while the highest placed junior woman will be seeded into the Women’s round of 48.

Brandon Jackson (Durban North) is the defending Pro Junior Men’s champion and will be back to defend his title in 2007, after a successful run of two consecutive wins in 2005 and 2006.

He can expect some stiff competition from the likes of ASP World Junior Champion Jordy Smith (Durban) who has shot to world number one on the WQS ratings, South African junior team member Dale Staples (St Francis), South African Junior team captain Klee Strachan (Winklespruit), and WQS rookie Clinton Gravett (East London).

The girls division sees a similarly prestigious lineup, with local girls determined to take back the title that has been historically captured by the international contingent, Karina Petroni (USA) winning the event in 2005 and Amy Stewart (AUS) in 2006.

South African Junior champion Chantelle Rautenbach (Cape Town), National junior team member Tarryn Chudleigh (Cape Town), former Rip Curl International Gromsearch champion Nikita Robb (East London), Sarah Baum (Warner Beach) and Heidi Palmboom (Bluff) are just a few of South Africa’s junior surfing talents expected to excel this weekend.

The Mr Price Pro Junior offers U20 surfers the unique opportunity to perform on a global platform as the international surfing world hones in on Durban, in anticipation of the six star WQS event.  “We wanted to keep the event local, so that our South African Junior surfers would have the chance to warm up and get comfortable competing under the conditions of a major international event,” says Clynt Lund of Mr Price Sports Marketing.

The Mr Price Pro Junior takes place on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 June. The finals of which will be held at approximately 14h15 on Saturday.  The Mr Price Pro Men’s Trials take place on Sunday followed by the Six Star WQS Mr Price Pro which runs from 1- 8 July 2007. The Mr Price Pro forms part of the ten day Durban Beach Festival.
